A stupid project....

Having sold my Scorpa I find myself trials bike less for my continued suicide attempts. So, after consultation with the Minge last night I'm going to step back down to novice ( I may live longer this way) for a while, so a pukka trials bike is not a necessity, so......

I'm going to make a trials bike out of a chinese cruiser!!!!!!!!

If I strip off all the lights and clocks, erradicate all the chrome rubbish, centre stand, and the twin pipes, I should be able to get the weight down to a couple of hundred kilo's.

Then the stupid stepped seat, big tank, can join it all in the bin and I should just have a frame, spoked alloy wheels, 'leccy start (yes really!) and the fun can begin.

So anyone got any spoked wheels in 18/21 sized they don't want, scrappier the better, some longer rear shocks and a dinky little tank?

Reckon it'll be fun, and so long as I don't spend too much dosh, I won't care if I bin it - which I did with the Scorpa.

Pics to follow.

Funny .... you are making a road bike into a dirt bike and I'm making a dirt bike into a road bike!

The tank was the biggest prob lots on ebay, most rusty and never really sure if it will fit! I got my XL 185 tank for a £10. I'd suggest a TL 125 tank or similar, dinky and available!

a) Road bikes converted on limited budgets i.e. £100 total budget DTRF sweepstake £5er each winner takes all ....

Or ....

b) Radical Korean / Chinese or other junk converted for trials with the same fun competition sweepstake pint in each winner gets trousered smile

16 rear and 18 front. Cheng shin do a 16 rear tyre, and I've just found a 2.75x18 front trials tyre on e-bay.

Might be worth sticking with the spoked wheels - be differentbiggrin

A little while later.....

Now, if I move the exhausts, there's a surprising amount of ground clearance, the footrests need to move back about 4 inches, which is easy, just swap them side to side, the stands need to come off, and the rear shocks need to be longer and softer as the ones on it are rocks!

Making progress!! I think I'd see if I could source some cheap wheels. 21" front will make life a whole lot easier, as would folding footpegs, you may tangled with fixed ones?!

Well, it's now got footrests that fold up and are 5 - 6 inches further back. Rear shock mounts are relocated, and the exhausts are off, and the poxy studs are out - did snap a stud extractor in one of them of course.....

Didn't win my front tyre though......

More pics more pics!

I had a nightmare getting a cylinder bolt off the YZ it was already rounded, no room through the fins for a spanner, I thought about a thread extractor which had worked on the sheared footrest bolts but the thought of a sheared extractor down inside the fins was not a good prospect, I eventually found a 3/8 drive 11mm socket that has a 12point rather than hex socket, I drove that on and applied some gently heat, fortunately it came free!

Progress of a sort. Found a slightly smaller tank, but it's still way too big. Cut and shut the brake and gear levers, found a pair of sidepanels that fit, and bodged the old Scorpa rear mudguard.

Really hate to be churlish (it was a pressie) but this camera is rubbish!

Good old Snaf just donated a pair of 'bars (bent) two pairs of shocks (leaking)and an old Montesa fuel tank. Just joking, the tank bars and shocks should be just the job to get the bike somewhere near to a dinky trials bike. Just need to make an exhaust now, which is gonna be awkward as it's a twinport head - two pipes, one either side?

Well things have moved on a bit; it now has an exhaust. Two pipes running along the right side of the engine, and ending right by the engine..............

Noisy?

Just a tad.....

Tried it and there was no lock, so I ground off the lock stops - much better.

It also has a seat which is the cut down king and queen seat, and it's now running its original tank which is huge, but fits properly.

Anyone want to donate a dinky little tank for this project?

Ridden it up and down the road (private) and I can truly say it is furkin' horrible! But the total cost so far is a big fat zero, and after a half hour session with the spanners, I got the little bugger running quite well. Wouldn't pull a boyscout off his sister, but it does go, stop and turn corners.

Bit of fettling to be done yet, need to paint it all one colour and sort out a seat fixing point, but other than another tank if I can find one, it's finished.

I can see you're all suitably impressed - mighty is it not? Total cost, including all the bits =£0

I got the shocks and bars off Snaf, and the little horror has donated a load of bits (headlight to a DT125, rear shocks, carrier, exhausts to a CD 200 Benly) to other motorcycles to keep them on the road.

Sounds pretty good (for a 125) on its open pipes, could still do with a smaller tank - looking for donations.
