It depends what value the shipper put on the customs declaration.

Welcome to my world! When I restored the CBX, I got collared every time I bought something from the States, and when you do it takes bloody ages for PF to actually tell you - the bloody item will have been sat there for days before they bother to ask you for their extortion.

The point is that he had already paid the seller for shipping.  HMRC then added their extra taxation when it got to this country.

Ah the marvel of Parcel "FARCE"   I dont think they can actually tell you how they sort out their charges

VAT seems to work on a sliding scale,  go much over £100 and they start hitting you with import duty

However its arbitary, I bring a lot of kit in from the states sometimes you get charged VAT and Duty and their handling charge for an item worth £50 next time its something worth 2 grand and you just get the handling charge

And if you think thats bad, I had to pick a parcel up from the Marsh Barton depot, I had the PF form in hand plus some indentification, paid for the parcel and they then informed me they had another parcel for me, OK I will take it, their response unless I could tell them where it was coming from I couldnt have it, they would have to deliver it.

There is a sign on the wall warning about verbal abuse of their staff, no bloody wonder with rules like that Arghh, sooner the whole is sorted out the better.

If you can always get stuff shipped UPS or DHL quite often its cheaper and a far better service than Parcel FARCE, and if you are sending UPS they are half the price guarentee delivery and look after the parcels

But Parcel Farce are not the worst, dont ever use TNT,  they will break anything and tell you its your fault, even if the stuff is being delivered to you, and then try to charge you for the privilidge of breaking it for you

I queried a recent US purchase with the UK Border Agency and their eventual reply says that they charge VAT (currently 15%) on anything vaued over £18 and Import Duty (4.7%) on anything valued over £120.

"The additional £8 is a Parcelforce Worlwide fee which is levied by them as a contribution towards the cost of presenting the parcel to the UK Border Agency, paying the duty and VAT on your behalf and collecting it from you.  It is entirely separate from the duty and VAT charged by the UK Border Agency........."

Moral of the story, don't blame Parcel Force!

Parcelforce is not part of RM any more, same as the Post Office, 3 completely different companies, part of the governments competition rules. I personally couldn't give a monkeys about what is said about RM or Parcelforce. As for companies looking after parcels, at my depot we get TNT, UPS, City Link, CITIPOST, UKMail, DHL etc sending their mail through RM which includes parcels and none of them give a monkeys about handling your mail either, at least everyone gets treated fairlywink

Which explains why my sprocket cover came over with no prob and no money to pay.  Doubt I'll be so lucky with the NOS reed valve block!

There is bit about "duty" being charged on the whole price, including the postage.  It is unclear whether they are reffering to VAT or Import Duty, perhaps they mean either.

Suck, swallow and forget about it! wink
