Hi  there you techno people, a friend of mine's wife wants to buy my friend a Sat Nav for christmas but one that would be good for a car and his motorcycle (not trial bike)
me being a complete trog with things all gizzmo said i would try and help her find a suitable one (ha ha) so if any of you or all could point me in the right area i would be very grateful hmmhmm

Garmin Zumo or Tom Tom rider.  I've just bought a reconditioned Zummo 500 which is a three year old model.  Their latest - 660 - is about £500 if you shop around.

Tom Tom Rider V2 comes with a Bluetooth headset to attach to your helmet, for listening to navigation/music/phone calls.  Zumo doesn't come with a headset, you either buy one for your existing helmet or buy a Bluetooth helmet.
