Editing messages

Wacky's query about editing a post followed on from one I had from TJ so it spurred me into having  a delve behind the scenes (whilst the mistress is away and all that!)  to see why the edit button was disappearing.

I now understand why in that the forum global setting is for messages to be available for edit only within the first 24 hours.

That seems reasonable in that after 24 hours, on a busy forum like this one, any changes to the original message would be lost to new readers unless they happened to scroll to the top of the thread and see and edit comment.

Wouldn't it be best to post a new message with the changes?

There isn't any scope for fine tuning. It's either no changes after 24 hours or edits can be made at any time.

What do you folk think about it - can you see pros/cons for both options?

Please post up your thoughts and which option you prefer please!

I don't think it matters. Full editing mean the information captured can be corrected so that it is useful library.

No edit after 24hrs seem restrictive but maybe more useful on bitchy forums where people might want to offend somebody but then remove the evidence.

Either option as far as I'm concerned, doesn't bother me either way.

24 hrs is not long if you consider posting something on Friday, going away for the w/end then on Monday you realise a mistake and can't correct it.
This forum seems polite, friendly and has good moderators who I believe will do a good job in stopping, immediately, any bitchiness so I reckon we should go with the 'Any time ' option.smile
