I'm flogging the TTR this week once it's all spruced up, to pay for a new business venture as the credit crunch has hit the Hart household.
Anyway I'll be without bike for at least 8 weeks, and plan to buy new beastie. I love my TTR but my needs have changed. So the question is what next?? Any sensible suggestions would be great, but they must match my criteria!!
Must be over 400cc to haul my hefty arse uphill!
Must have a leccy boot, as a lazy git!
Must ride well on roads??
Be able to take a rack on the rear end to carry gear?
Not too heavy?
Possibly no such bike exists as my needs are too great!

Forget the E its too highly strung compared to the S. The S has all the road manners and kit and is fine on the strip. Less servicing too (required for a commuter)
Cut the seat down and widen it slightly, wind the suspension down and even fits my short arse, no need for lowering links.
I dont have much experience green laningbut it hauls my large arse up them hills!!!! Well most of them
Are you looking for a bike to go around the world on Harty?
If so, take Lois Pryce's advice and buy as near to new that you can afford. You don't want to be doing engine/gearbox/suspension rebuilds in Outer Mongolia
Although the DRZ400S seems like an obvious recommendation, didn't I read on here about overlanders having problems with them once they racked up the miles?
Austin Vince did Salt and Gold on one and darned if I can recall what he thought of his maybe ask him on Thursday night
Austin seemed to speak highly of the DR-Z400S, so much so that he talked Snasher into buying one to do his recent Horizons Unlimited tour.
It's just outside of your search criteria Harty but how about the DR350?
Far be it from me to recommend anything other than the DR-Z400 (E)
But the DR350 is a large'ish CC air cooled bike with 6 gears and both kick & electric start (if you buy the right version). There is an E & an S version, I've never ridden one but I'd imagine it's similar to the TT250 in comfort & road manners but with more grunt.

Cheers for that wealth of info and advice, looks like it'll be either the DRZ400E with the S subframe or the Beemer G650x. Hopefully will have approx £2400 to spend, depending of work.
