Honestly I would love a KTM - I really think they are great bikes, however I am new to the trail riding world and I am just realising how much maintenance goes into looking after trail bikes.
My current bike is a DRZ 400s. I am going to use this for a RTW trip. I need to learn all the maintenance necessary to do the trip and believe me I am. I couldn't do a RTW on a KTM unless it was an adventure bike and for me the current KTM adventure bike is too heavy.
I also need a RTW bike that will go 4000 miles between major services.
Now if I was just riding the green lanes I would buy a KTM as they look and sound great, I also like picking up bits........ no seriously they are great bikes.
I hate riding my KTM on road as its not a road bike, similarly so my Kwakanaki ZX9r didn't fair well when I took it off road (Don't ask it was dark and I was going too quick).
Similarly so my Virago 750 is a ponsy cruiser which appeals to many that are not bike riders or know the faintest thing about bikes, as long as its not running as its deafening, its more ZZtop than blacktop. Really it a quarter a tonne of crap.
All bikes are made for a purpose to suit different wants and needs and wallets. Dual purpose bikes are just that, neither one or the other so not very good at either
