Easy solution is that when out greenlaning next, sling a tyre over your shoulder and dump it at the first farm you come to, got to be the worst culprits for dumping their crap in the country. How many tidy farms do you ever see with no crap? And I'm not talking cow or sheep ****!

Chelson Meadow in Plymouth hasn't taken tyres for some time now, "you'll have to take them to tyre depot for disposal, mate"...........................no 

There is a fair list of charges being brought in for dumping plasterboard etc, it'll only lead to one thing, additional challenges at the end of lanes.

Thanks Brian, I had a used front hanging around that's just been added to today's dump run.biggrin

My current rear is also done for but I not sure i can be bothered to change it before tomorrow.hmm

At least they are still accepting tyres, in Hampshire the council had no provision for dealing with them and the local tip turned me away, I phoned the council for advise and they didn't know what to advise me! so I advised them to what people would be doing with them unless they thought of something.biggrin

Think yourselves lucky down there in Devon. As from the 4th April, Somerset are going to charge an "entry fee" of £2 per visit regardless of what you are recycling, and £4.20 per tyre on top of that (£45 per tyre if it is light commercial!!). The hedgerows of our green and pleasant land may not be so green and lush for much longer!! cry

Chris - that is absolute brainless short sightedness...

It's almost too much trouble for some people to store their heavy rubbish and take it to the Recycling centres without there being an admission fee, back in Basingstoke that meant a 15 minute jaunt across town (sometime long if the traffic was bad) and then a up to a 20 minute wait in a long queue. If you add to that a charge then I'm sure the queue's will become a lot shorter all of a sudden.

I think the recycling centres are one area that should be fully funded - even if that means the council tax needs to rise as it costs a hell of lot more to clear fly tipping - rant over smile.gif

Had a chat with the "lady" who runs the Recycling centre at Crediton. This has been imposed on her by DCC and the Centre operators now have to pay for the disposal of everything that comes in, this probably means the chargeable stuff.

Her main argument is that people pay by the bag with no specified weight to bring rubble in but she has to pay for it's removal by weight. She has no idea if the fee will cover the removal. She has been provided with a nice set of scales to weigh bags if there is an argument but the is no maximum weight. There will be arguements.

If I borrow my brother-in-law's twin axle trailer to take 2 bags of rubble, I won't be allowed in!

You couldn't make it up could you!  Must go, off with another load.

£4.20 a tyre!!! omg.gif The likes of Kwik-Fit etc only charge £1.50-2.00 each!! The actual cost of disposing of a tyre is 75p. So how on earth can they justify that?? My advise is take them to the local tyre depot (ie Kwik-Fit / National / ATS). Most of the guys wouldn't give a sh!t anyway. You could even do it when you changed the tyres on your car, I'm sure then they'll be more than happy to take them off your hands?!! wink

One thing is guaranteed though - fly tipping will be on the increase so if the tyres and plasterboard are laid at the right angle we can get some excellent jumps to start the lane off withbiggrin

Here is an extract from the press notice

 

A pay-per-use fee of £2 will be introduced to keep four at-risk Recycling Centres open, Somerset Waste Partnerships governing Board agreed today (25/3).

The £2 fee for each visit was agreed by Somerset Waste Board to prevent the closure of the centres at Crewkerne, Coleford, Dulverton and Middlezoy.

he visit fee is part of a comprehensive savings package, including reduced hours at Recycling Centres and new charges for specific materials, agreed to help meet the funding reduction of £1.9 million over two years required by Somerset County Council.

The decision on a Recycling Centre visitor fee requires a change in their status under the law to become Community Recycling Sites, which could open SWB to the risk of a legal challenge, the possible costs of which the countys six councils agreed to underwrite. 

All changes will come in from 4 April at Recycling Centres and Community Recycling Sites, with opening hours cut from 56 in winter and 70 in summer to 40 hours year-round, and each centre shut two days a week, with a staggered rota so centres do not close on the same days.

Recycling Centres and Community Recycling Sites charges for residents bringing in gas bottles, tyres, soil and rubble will range from £6-£35 for various sizes of gas bottles; £3.30-£4.20 for car tyres and £45.60 for general commercial tyres; and £2.90-£116 for soil or rubble

 

Mind you it doesnt mention motor cycle tyres!

I got on and took my worn rear off so had two tyres to dump today.

Guy at the tip said "your lucky mate, would have had to pay for them tomorrow"biggrin

You should bear in mind that apart from the 4 Somerset sites, most of the charges are being brought in on commercial waste that a lot of people dump as private.

We were at the Crediton one a while back and someone brought a trailer full of uPVC windows in and dumped them as private. No way was that amount not trade waste. Similarly a lot of builders will use trailers instead of paying for a skip.

What is wrong is that at £7/sheet it now costs more to dump an 8x4 sheet of plasterboard in Devon than it does to buy it from Wickes.

I can see a lot more fly-tipping going on.

That is correct, however previously DCC paid the contractors to dispose of the stuff, and now they don't.

 Initially the income was going to go to DCC, who would use it to reimburse the contractors when they had disposed of the controlled waste through approriate routes.

However DCC are obviously very trusting (and wanted to save all their admin costs in cycling the money) and so worked out a set of rates that allow the contractors to dispose of the waste and make a moderate admin costs for handling the cash and keeping records.

Hopefully the contractors will not just trouser the cash and chuck our old tyres in with the landfill.

At Paignton recycle centre you are allowed an annual free allowance for disposal of tyres (something like 3 or 4 per year). You have to have ID that the tip is local to you.

I also had 2 tyres, an MT43 and a Scorpion front and he said as they were quite small he'd only count it as 1.

This was only a few months ago - so hopefully this hasnt changed.

I was just about to set off for Sidmouth but checked the DCC website. It seems that it costs the same £1.35 at any of the recycling centres to dispose of tyres.

I think tyre companies charge about £2 a tyre on your new tyre bill to get rid of the old 'uns.....

Just checked and paignton recycle centre allows 5 free tyres disposals per person in each household.

Woohoo. If I'm in credit in December I'll start a cut rate tyre disposal service for you all. Lol.

Another update... cryno

As of April Sidmouth recycling centre went up to £3.50 per tyre (the same as Chard's tip).... luckily I got a couple in last month whilst it was still £1.50 each (clearing out from moving).

I wouldn't mind but it's the same price for a hulking great car tyre as it is for a MC front!

So.., looks like the wheelie bin will be getting mine from now on.biggrin
