EXC 200 on the road ? - Opinions


I fancy a new bike, and would like to go 2-stroke for lightness/speed/simpleness.

Was thinking a <2002 Ktm EXC / EGS, as they are the autolube version, so I wouldn't have to worry about mixing oil in petrol. Also I would get money back from my WR, to pay off debt and/or put towards a road biased second bike or car lessons ect.

Thing is ; I use the bike daily to get me to work/ general commuter. Now I know a stroker wouldn't be as good on the road as my current WR250F (290 big bore kit fitted). So is this a silly idea.

Work isn't that far ; aprox <7 miles from my doorstep to work, through 30/40 limit roads, so no dual carrigeways and only a little bit of congested town traffic, at the work end of the journey. This journey is done mon - fri. Weekends the bike is used for laning / TRF events, and possibly a quick ride to the shops. So not massive miles through the week.

The bike will generally be kept in a garage, but aprox 2 days a week I stay at my mother house, where the bike will be left outside on the street overnight. Not too bad this time of year, but in the winter season hmm ??

I have spoken to Justin Gibbs about this, and he says it will be more maintainence then the WR, and wouldn't be as nice on the road. It will get very oiled up, but it shouldnt be too bad, and piston and rings should not need regular changing.

As i mentioned earlier, I would get money back from the WR, so I was thinking I could pick up a spare rear wheel and fit a more road biased tyre and a smaller rear sprocket.

Anyway, is this a silly idea ? Would I be getting into lots of problems on the road clocking up a few miles ?

 I really dont think it would be more maintenence at all. Oil would work out the same, wr every 500kms and a litre of 2t would last about the same if not more. Sams egs has been absolutey brilliant, been out most weekends since last august and it has never missed a beat. 

What sort of riding will you be doing on the road? Commuting and filtering and then a spireted start from the traffic lights should stop it oiling up but i cant see that being a problem as it is such a torquey motor. And can ride all day at tickover. Dunno about the 290 but my 450 is a chore on the road, Contantly changing gears to keep the chain from slapping and it jumping about.

Just need to find a good one ;0 smile

Ok thanks for that. Yeah that basically would be the road riding, when I get into Plymouth city center, there is a lot of bus lanes anyway so you can ride past the traffic. There is not normally any places where I am stopped/stuck in traffic (except maybe red lights).

Yea the 290 goes through the gears, not from chain slap but just to keep it in the torquey range.

Will defo keep my eyes open, would be nice to try one out though before buying, to see if I get on with it.

Seeing that eastern block countries used 2 stroke cars for many years cant see where the problem lies !

me thinks, stick with wr your just going to wear out the little 200 the 125/200 is a compitition 2T race engine not a detuned run of the mill understrest commutor step through ? have you thought of a crm250 honda old but up to the job ? oil injection ?

ive got an 08 200 EXC and its running enduro gearing i wouldnt want to use it as a commuter but as lost says its built for racing but the EGS200s were more or less a trail version of the EXC and were popular among the long distance trial boys for there good manners all round a mate of mine had one from new and kept it for years and always regretted getting shot of it best bet is to try one if you can

Yeah i ment the EGS, as they are the autolube version.

Lost - thanks, I did think about a CRM 250 but they are older again, and more trail bikes, would prefer something a little more off road / competition biased.
