Guys I just Px'd a Husky for a KTM 250 four stroke. The shop where I did the deal would said he would MOT the 2006 bike prior to my collection but when I returned with my do the deal he said he didn't have time so I took the bike to sort MOT myself.
I had a call from the garage today who said amonst the fact the front wheel bearings, chain, back light and font light, front and back sprokett oil needed replacing but there was also metal filings in the gear box oil......quite a lot of metal filings.......
Now before you all say I should have checked this etc etc I haven't owned a bike for 18 years and forgot the key things to check when buying..WHAT SHOULD I DO? APART FROM CRY
You should take comfort from the fact you bought it from a dealer because if this was a private sale you would have no comeback whatsoever.
Trading standards are your friend should the dealer refuse to help.
If you paid by credit card then you can call you card issuer and tell them you will refuse to pay and they will deal with the dealer for you should he refuse to refund you.
You should take the bike back to the dealer and ask for (demand politely) your money and bike back. He should either sort all the mot failure problems or refund you.
The deal you arranged included an mot remember.
If you do not get satisfaction then tell the world about this dishonest dealers actions and warn us all who he is so he doesn't get the chance to rob any of us too.
hi i usually just browse the forum as im bikeless at the minute, but i was in a similar situation to you, except i purchaced the bike over the phone after seeing it on the dealers site so i was covered by the distance buying regs after a long fight, when i contacted trading standards they were not interested and told me to pursue through small claims court, but they would take a note of the dealer and put it on there system for future reference,i then tried citezens advice who were also useless in the end i went thru moneyclaim online set up a court case and eventually got my money back, the downside for you is you viewd the motorcycle i presume?? before you purchaced where as i know you dont have x ray vision but i think it puts a whole new slant on it from what i was told, if the dealer fobs you off please name and shame as said im currently looking and dont want to give my buisness to people like that.
if the bike hasnt done many miles the metal filings might not be unusual. The magnetic sump plug on my BETA (KTM 450)had a beard of filings for the first couple of thousand miles as the gears bedded in. The rest sounds bad though

It does sound as though it could be normal running in although the oil should have been changed long ago after a few miles: run in with a cheap oil to bed everything in and flush out any machining swarf then change the oil for something better. But with all the other things listed it does look as though this bike hasn't been well cared for or serviced properly so I'd be inclined to walk away from it.
Oh dear, wasn't that the the shop that recently closed and then restarted again?
If so people on here were generally speaking well of them, I'd be surprised if they were trying to pull one. Still, if there isn't a good resolution to this then maybe we should all be wary of them in future.
Yeah, when I looked had no MOT but said it will come with one if I had it, keen with money burning a hole in my pocket, i took it, when I collected it, looked at the ticket, had advisories so I asked what they were and where was the advisorie slip he made up some crap and fobbed me off as he already had my cash in his till, a few lanes later engine blown gearbox shredded! And the couldn't even be bothered to send v5 (prob didn't even have it) rang them to ask if they posted, reply yes, probs lost in post. Cowboys if you ask me
How did they find metal filings in the gearbox on an MOT ????????
Wow man: that's like so totally where my head was before having watched the simpsons Cheech n Chong thang
Still the point is was it fit or not - for purpose: if not get your money back if from a reputable trader or if not launch a civil suit to sue a rogue trader - think if carefully handled £110 max liability but it may at least warn others -also tends to facilitate out of civil court settlements with rogues....

My mate had a car related going over, and took it through small claims, it took a while (slow process) and the garage coughed up (I don't think they even turned up on the day in court) so you could threaten them with it, sounds like you have a good case as any competant and credible garage knows what an MoT failure looks like.
Well since KTM only warrant the bikes for a month from new I reckon you are going to struggle getting any headway as regards squealing to the dealer. Sorry but thats they way it is.
The wheel bearings are pretty much normal tbh, its almost like a consumable part on a dirt bike like this as they wear out regular, like shock seals etc, much like sprockets as well. You have a pedigree bike and they cost money to run, it doesn't make it a better trail bike though, just costs more and more capable on enduros rather than chanking down a devon lane.
I had a 250execf 08, lovely bike but it was just too expensive to warrant trundling it down the lanes. The earlier ones I believe suffered from Clutch basket bearings/bits coming apart in the clutch and its a common cause of filings in the gbox.
I wouldn't panic too much yet, sometimes some places lay it on a bit thick when in reality its not sooo bad.
Was that where you bought the gasser from? My freind bought a 200exc from them couple of months back and bottom end collapsed within 20 miles
The DRZ 400 I bought off them, top end went after 3-4 weeks !!
And then the engine completely f***ed 2 months after the new piston ...
sorry to say this particular dealer hasnt had a good rep even when they first started in newton abbot by the railway station knew of people who paid deposits and never got the bike and only got money back by force i personaly wouldnt deal with them and never have but im sure there are lots of people who have good things to say but i guess its the same with most dealers

Well I'm one of those that have a good thing to say about them. Always found them helpful. I have bought a couple of bikes from them and had the Tiger MOT'd/Serviced there.
If I have had any problems they have always sorted them out........

There was a shop near the railway station that closed and left bad debt behind. I heard the Hells Angels bought the debt. Frequent tales told since of deposits paid for goods that never turned up. They did sell a number of containers full of trail bikes, but the container supplier may not have been paid.
Green Lane Motorcycles was a different, smaller, shop 100 yards away just around the corner behind the Eastern Eye Restaurant. They moved to Marsh Barton Exeter near Bridge motorcycles until their landlord locked them out (cash flow problems) and they moved again recently. Still trading in Exeter under the same name.
Thats right pete, brought my XR400 from there, he folded the next day . luckily the xr was perfect, kinda wish i hadn't sold it, the photos i took when it went in autotrader were amazing, it looked so good. But then every time i hop of the orange beastie all is well
Its confusing me a bit seeing the negative comments about green lanes, they have been good to devon trf over the years, setting the trend with member discount and helping with Rights of Way stuff.
Something has changed since they moved across town, i do know they were dropped in it big time by the owners of the unit at Marsh barton it very nearly finnished them off.
Please remember guys;
As ever the first port of call with complaints must be with the retailer, by all means you can use this forum to name and shame but please make it the last option once your tottaly sure of all the facts. Its very easy dropping comments on this forum make sure the recipient hasn't made a honest mistake!
There aint enough dirt bike retailers in Devon as it is
Bought my very first TTR from the railway station guys and it took a bit of work to get it right.
Regarding Green Lanes, John, Dave and Barry (OK he has left now) have all been really good over the years with kit, accessories, consumables, repairs and MOTs. The TRF discount given would quite often cover the years TRF membership fee.
Certainly only praise for Green Lanes from this very satisfied customer
Can only speak as I find - got my 1st Trail bike (ttr) from them when they were at Marsh Barton, good deal and a nice little bike that served me well with no problems
If you're referring to Grand Prix Motorcycles, which was situated by the train station in Newton Abot, which was owned and run by Mark Reece, then he deserves to be named and shamed :
He's incredibly dodgy and has been convicted of fraud.
I asked him to sell a ZX9R once, which he eventually did and it took me months to get the money for it after numerous visits and threats. His excuse was that he needed the money to buy more stock and thats how buisnesses operated....
If he is involved in Green Lanes bikes or any other dealers then i would avoid like the plague!
I've noticed he's still selling bikes and cars (exotic ones which probably don't exist) on eBay (seller id jumby916) trading as GPM Classics (could GPM stand for Grand Prix Motorcycles i wonder?...) so beware!! As far as i know he is still based in Newton Abbot - Seymour Road to be precise!

GP used to bring crates of grey import trail bikes in from Japan and I bought my Serow from them although it wasn't quite as straightforward as I'd have liked or expected; Mark registered it for me but told DVLC it was two years older than it actually was and this was reflected by the number plate. I kicked up a fuss and insisted he get it re-registered which he managed to do. Also the choke cable fixing had broken (common on Serows) and I was promised a new one... still waiting!
Once it needed an MOT and, believing GP were still trading, rang and made an appointment. When I got there the shop was closed and boarded up but Mark still met me and took the bike in where 'his bloke who comes in to do the MOTs' would test it. It passed but I felt something strange had just occurred although with a new MOT in hand didn't question it too much. While waiting he explained he was redeveloping the premises and would continue trading bikes elsewhere but I never saw him again.
But, that was the long closed Grand Prix Motorcycles next to the station - Greenlane Motorcycles were, IIRC, up an alley over the road and quite separate.
ok not mentioning any dealers ? and already commented on your pradicament ? i was wondering as i didnt see the oil removed from the gearbox when you had the service and MOT ? thing is if neglected you can get a fair bit of contamination in the gearbox oil from the clutch plates if they run in the same oil ? as the for the gearbox if this engine is a new generation twin cam not sure if clutch/ gearbox oils are same/seperated ? but if same could be just a case of poor maintanance ? lost
do a good service on it and dont worry about it my 2002 rfs 400 still has a small amount of crap on the sump plug and its got somthing like 500 hours on it aparently
