depends on what year bikes your looking at early crfxs had trouble with rear wheels collapsing and valve shim issues also not as powerful as wrfs but on the whole both good bikes . i personally have had 3 wrfs but if you are looking at a new bike they have loads of unsold crfxs you can get a mega deal if you hunt around but either bike you cant really go wrong just check out the history no of owners etc
loved my crf250x 2007, had it for 2 1/2 years, great bike, have a wr450f 2008 now, and is good too, cant go wrong with either but did love the honda, ticked all my boxs
Both bikes are competition motox/enduro machines and not trail bikes.
Not appropriate machines as first green laners really.
Lol both are perfectly adequate. Wr250f is very much a trail bike in standard form, as is the crfx if the exhaust diffuser is still in place.
I would say a crf250x. 3 in our regular group have them and you cant go wrong if you keep on top of maintenence
I can only agree with everything the last person said (Delvey, that is).
I've spent a few days in Spain on a WR250F, and now own a CRF250X (ex-Kev Doyle, see above) - both very nice trail bikes, and more than adequate for anything you're likely to find around these parts. Don't go for anything heavier!

big T , is spot on and delvey apart from pete ( sorry pete, think they are excellent green laners) , changed my crf250x for the sake of change really, 250 plenty of power, light weight, go anyware, only limits the rider, id go with the honda personally,
I to would recomend the wrf the motors are very tuff and reliable im lead to understand one let go not so long ago doing 70mph with 10.000 on the clock not bad for a motocross engine ide say ? ive played with the motor on mine [uncorked it and was very impressed] cam timing gray wire cut throttle stop modded plus silencer went very well and would still plonk along ? the crf is a very good bike make no mistake but u need the the mx version to equal the same poke of the wrf if your thinking of modding good luck

Having spent 15 hours riding in the last week and 45 hours riding in the last month I would say an appropriate machine would be something which the manufacturer reckons would last more than a few weeks before needing an engine rebuild!
A point of order:I did not question whether these are excellent green laners, only whether they are appropriate for use on public roads given that as competition machinery they lack as standard most of the silencer/speedo/horn/lights/indicators type of accessories appropriate for road use, (and the lanes are public roads remember). Obviously with a number of modifications these are excellent machines.

Not accurate - my WR250F, standard from the factory had indicators, was properly silenced, had horn, lights, indicators. I think Jules's is the same. These were not aftermarket bolt-ons, it also had the factory switchgear as well! No modifcations needed for a legal, MOT-passing, TRF friendly bike. Modifications needed if you want to perk it up a bit
had my CRF250X 2 YEARS, not an R but an X ,but never changed piston, honda brill bike, as im sure WR will be, really dont think u an can go wrong with either, 15 hours, ha what a load of hot air, maybe an R, but cant see it, but not an X, proved that, done 20 x that in 2 years

Totally agree with you Hoops, straight out of the crate and unmolested the WR250F is a fantastic bike, treat it with respect and it's very forgiving machine for the new rider, producing good low down power with the correct gearing, but as your talent and confidence grow, this machine will more than match the expectations of most riders, and with gentlemen like Mr Muller and our chairman Mr Squib owning one, I don't think I need to say anymore.
