When I went to Portugal a couple years ago I was told to take a reflective jacket plus a red triangle in case of breakdown or otherwise. Also it is their law that you carry at least a copy of your insurance, mot, and log book in case of accident or otherwise. Last thing was to put a headlight deflector on your headlight.blankstare.gif oh never saw anyone wearing the jackets. as long as you are carrying the items guess was ok

Can anyone tell me if it has been made law yet that you have to wear a high vis vest on a motorcycle when in France/ Spain ?

Not sure if its the law to wear one but you are supposed to carry one. Amongst a load of other stuff. And the police out there are not too friendly either. Make sure you keep your lights on all the time!!!!

Not yet, but the rules that are for bikes are that you must have some form of reflective material worn, so reflective arm bands would be acceptable. Also they have just passed a law that all motorists must now also carry a alcohol breathalyser from 1st July 2012!!

From what I gathered when I looked into this before, France requires to carry the Hi vis vest for breakdowns and a triangle for cars but not bikes, but in any case you would be well advised to wear hi vis and keep your lights on all the time as the French drive like maniacs when down the smaller roads.

A string of onions worn around the neck and a beret are however law

This new Reflective law comes in, in France, on 01/01/2013, for riders and passengers, of bikes over 125cc/15kW.

You don't require a Hi-vis vest, but it must be a reflective area larger than 150cm2 between waist and head. I'm sure a french entrepreneur who prints a hand shaped reflective patch with middle digit raised, ala Adele style, will make a fortune!

Seems the French green party have submitted plans to ban any pre 2004 vehicles from large city centres, including bikes, how short sighted is that?

That's a stroke on genius actually as most French cars last less than 8 years before the electrics are shot.biggrin
