So....had my first mx adventure on saturday (save for a couple of trips to Wheeldon), that being a few fast and frantic hours at Brixton MX track.
I should start off by saying that I was on my trusty DRZ400 and my mate was on an old XT600 .... the looks and comments of others around us ranged from pity to amusement throughout the day.
1st lap....a few brown pants moments and thoughts of 'what am I doing here?'...but after 10 laps we were in the swing of things and had mud crusted grins across our faces.
By 2:30pm (having started at 11am) I was dead on my feet with burning knees and serious arm pump, I decided to call it a day. Had a seriously good laugh and came away, body, mind and bike in one piece. My mate had a few offs and left with a bent brake pedal...but nothing too serious. Only attention my bike needed was a hose down and in particular the air filter needed a good clean and re-oil.
I would recommend it to anyone who isn't already a serious 'crosser' and fancies having a go. It felt nice being able to give the bike a thrash in an off road environment as my trail riding is at a much more sedate pace. I was impressed with how my bike behaved itself..Yes we got lapped numerous times by well, everyone probably but I didn't embarrass myself and I felt like my technical ability was the limiting factor...rather than the heavy DRZ.
The track is between Plympton and Brixton. If you google earth it you can clearly see the track in a field just north of Brixton. There are no buildings its literally just a gate into a field. No pics i'm afraid but next time i'll take some. No need to book. Just turn up between 11am-4pm. I believe the track is open now every Saturday until some time in October. There are no sessions either..its just a case of pay your money and ride...which was a little hairy at times as you're riding amongst kids and more/less able riders all at once. At the peak of the day I would guess at about 20 bikes on track.
...... did you see the lad on the KTM in supermoto trim? Mad
Was it Robin I wonder (AKA: Maggotman) He was enquiring whether supermoto wheels/tyres were allowed at the recent Exmoor day! Stikes me as something he'd try
