Just sold a 1983 3 series, a good defender will fetch reasonable money 2k generally as a mimimum for half descent one.

Check the bulkhead and chassis as rot is a big problem even on the defenders..

best insurance NFU.

pre 72 tax excemp like nickpdo said.

best go for series 2 or 2a they are best investment.

series 1 forget it.

diesel 2 and a quater prefur but petrol faster.

personally i would go for a nice series 3 then fit a 200tdi engine.bolts straight on.

if you need any landy bits give me a shout. got loads of them.....ive got a few!!!!!!!!

Also get a quote from Footman James.

http://www.footmanjames.co.uk/classic-car-insurance?gclid=CKaawd_UxrACFSYhtAodzECeXQ

I had a Triumph Spitfire insured with them a few years ago, mega cheap, agreed value insurance & I could drive other cars 3rd party as well.
