Bombx what you have is a very powerfull steed indeed but do not worry the beast can be tamed into big or small pussy cat lol on the side of the barrell you may have noticed a brace counter sunk screw note how meny turns you make as this is your starting point by turning this screw inn you are applying tension on the power valve release stopping slowing any sudden release of excesses power if after tensioning tensioner your still experanceing to much go go then KTM offer three springs of diff tension I think ? Red is the stiffest installed this will turn your katoom into a torque monster with no sudden surprises in the power delivery the big bonus is the bike will not stall and once second gear is selected will not bog or stall just grunt lol enjoy lost

I have been using the xr 400 for green laning , great bike, does me fine
Last night I went out on. Ktm 300 exc and was shocked (was I expecting it to make things easier or make me look a better rider)
Around Rocombe I found it too power full on the places like the Piggery, vibrates ,no user friendly engine breaking
conclusion old and less can be much more fun for a lesser rider
I won't be getting rid of the 2banger just yet as I am determined to give it a fair trial
Has anyone else found this with new V old

You soon get used to the lack of engine braking you just use the brakes a bit more. I'm surprised about the vibes, and I thought the 300's were torquey low down meaning you could keep the revs down?

I've never been a fan of the Xr400 but I have gained respect for them as they have a lot of good use-able torque right of from tick-over. This make it easier to get going again when you have lost momentum 1/2 up a steep slippy climb. Most other bike will spin up the rear or require lots of clutch slippage.
I still wouldn't have one though as a bike without electric start is just wrong lol, I done my stint on kick start only bikes and I'm not going back any time soon.
2 strokes - I think I like the idea of them more than the reality. They seem to be very viby as far as I can tell.
Cheers Guys, I must admit it's great fun having these two bikes,I do feel the ktm has more to offer ,I think it would be rude not to go out again tonight

Mine vibes up through the bars, but as I'm generally shaking with fear anyway I don't really notice it Brakes didn't really notice the lack of engine braking till I got back on a 4t (Dougs big husky) and it almost pitched me over the bars when i shut the throttle off
I rode a TTR out of a lane for a 'fallen rider' a few weeks back and forgot how easy a ploddy old 4T made it all
Took my crm out for a short spin around Rocombe yesterday. Came back soaked in sweat with a huge grin. Nearly spat me off three times. Would have been easier on the 4 stroke ccm but that isn't the point is it. The 2 stroke demands more rider input and involvement and gives a greater sense of satisfaction. Nice to have a choice according to mood.
Pete .i totaly agree with you .I just got in from a good one hour ride in my local lanes and i must say im getting used to it...One lane (Rocombe Lane) i use a lot , going down it on my XR bang it in first gear and just roll. but with the KTM in first gear it gets faster (to fast for me)and i end up rear braking and stalling it half way down Tested it for top speed 85mph ! I think i need to change the gearing and get a bigger fuel tank Never saw one person around Rocombe or T golf course area tonight :) we are blessed in Devon

I love both. My old Husky vibrates like mad and demands ultimate respect and alot of effort. The old KLX is a doddle to ride and makes me lazy. The other four stroke is a bit like riding a two stroke on steroids but but with rubbish brakes and stuff all suspension. If I could ride the Husky more, then that would be my weapon of choice. The only issue is that is a nightmare for laning as it is built purely for enduro, and costs a great deal to run. You will have more fun on a two stroke though.

I thought the red spring was the thin spring which alows the govenor to open the valve earlier, ie the hit comes in earlier, then you have the yellow medium power delivery spring & the softest power delivery green spring which is the thickest gauge spring causing the palve to operate later thus less of a kick.
i would just change the springs to start with to see what suits you rather than screwing in (or out) the brass dolly ! ( bringing in the power valve too early can makes it come on the power with a real hit loosing traction especially when coming out of corners )
