Ok in my best pigeon English ill recall events friend neighbor received a call from a rep from BT hello this is BT I'm afraid your line rentle is in arrears your going to have to settle or be cut off ! Neighbor sorry I don't understand we are with Virgin yes but they rent line from BT neighbor I'm sorry I'm not making any payment BT rep I'm afraid your req proff madam please put your phone down and try and make a call to another number our neighbor did this and got no dialing tone shortly after BT rep rang back so payment will have to be now for £174.00 please pay following number :;$&@&$:/$ ? The neighbor declined and put the phone ! Rang 1471 number with held payment number appeared to be in South Africa ? This gent provided a very English name but with a South African accent this has been a public service announcement on behalf of lost be on your guard folks
I've heard about this, they validate their claim to be part of BT by supposedly blocking your phone, when all they actually do is put a hand over the reciever on the phone they are using, and not hang up until you try to make a call and hang up convinced you have been tempoarely cut off, when in fact all they have done is not terminated the original call, clever thieving bar stewards.
I use the service but i still get unwanted calls, but i am quick to inform them that i am on the Telephone Preferance Service and to update there database and not call me again

It is surprising how quickly the attitude changes when the TPS is mentioned. Most firms show respect and don't call again, it doesn't stop all calls but the majority.
