caddy/skoda are a bit short in the bed and very low to the ground for taking in and out of fields with a dirt bike on the back. Hilux 4x4 is a bit high and quite awkward to load on your own.
My money would go on a vauxhall brava either 2x4 or 4x4, the 4x4 is quite a nice height with good ground clearance whilst the bed is fairly low still. Loads about within budget.

why not just get a van ?
Don't want a van, too much metal/bulk. Not a nice looking thing to park outside your house when the drive is about to get smaller (dfg adaptation) prefer a pickup after my ute days in Oz.
2wd hilux sounds good. Cheers.
Not a chance for 2k. You can add 30% for similar age/miles/condition. I looked when I bought my Toyota. Landy's are silly expensive. Plus not that nice to drive on the road - scary lurching handling, noisy, the drivers seat is so close to the door you have to drive with the window open so you have somewhere to put your elbow, huge transmission tunnel, plus handbrake in the footwell so no good if you,ve got big feet. The design hasnt changed for 30+years, and it shows.
The best by a long way off road, and brilliant for towing heavy things, but if you want it mostly for road miles go Japanese.

Thanks, I'll see what my saved search on ebay turns up....
Consider single cab Nissan D21 and the Mazda B series as well as the Toyota and Mitsubishi.
Other than that Fords, VW,
Proton Jumbucks can get a bike in the back and are cheap and have good kerbside appeal but thirsty apparenty.
Got a 2001 rebadged Mazda B 2.5TD. 12 months Tax & MoT and a service for lot less than advertised. Collect it next week. Any reccomendations re. insurance? SDP use only. Or is trade insurance cheaper?
PS My mum hates red cars....

Ideal pickup should give many years of service without too many problems.
Only weak points to my knowledge are rear leaf springs sometimes break the main leaf or one below or as well as. Not normal a problem if its had light use, worth just having a close look with a torch when you pick it up, they can fracture either side of the axle clasps and can easily be missed on an MOT.
Should also add most of these make horrible granching noises on full lock, nowt to worry about its just the lock stop rubbing up and down on the stop plate, slap some grease on the plate and it will shut it up.

I had it on full lock a couple of times yesterday and nothing heard.

just got to get used to rear wheel drive, no abs and no weight over rear wheels. Luckily it wasn't built for speed as I think I'd be going most places sideways!
First 320 miles were completed at 29mpg which for an 11 year old 2.5td with 134K on the closk pleasantly surprised me. Not 1.6 Berlingo territory but it isn't a 1.6 Berlingo.
Bought a steering wheel knob today to makes the low ratio thick 4 rotations lock to lock steering wheel a doddle at low speed now.
Only ever been 6 feet maximum in first gear before changing into second. Lot calmer though, interesting parking on the school run.
Noisy as fook but loving it!
