Too hot to stop, nice as long as I keep moving and generate a breeze.
The heat above the tarmac nowadays reminds me of the south of France or Spain. Even at three figure speeds it still feels like someone has pointed a hairdryer up my sleeves and into my helmet.
The Feel free Nomad is pretty much the same thing as the Perception Scooter.
It's a direct rip off actually but in some ways better. They combined the best of the old and the new shape Perception scooter into one model (this was years ago).
Eating in the shade of the gazebo on Sunday, even with a cooling breeze, my digital thermometer read 33 degrees. Moved into the sunshine it shot up to 43. This did not bode well for the ride I had planned for the next day when I took the bike up to Yorkshire.
In reality it wasn't as bad as I'd feared as I left early and got to York at 11:30 so missed most of the heat of the day plus the constant moving along on the motorways may have been dull but at least it was cooler.
The return yesterday was different
I left Ripon at 10 with the aim to travel as far as I could before taking to the motorways but geography made that difficult.
Just where the country gets narrow the industrial revolution placed lots of towns to take advantage of all the natural resources to be found there. Add to that the Pennines running through it meant a circuitous route with lots of stop-start riding to try and slot a path between Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield - plenty of roads going east-west but not many running south-north. Well, not many a fully laden BMW could tackle!
In my heavy bikers clothes this was real boil-in-the-bag biking but never once was I tempted to strip down to shorts - unlike so, so many other bikers I saw.
Incidentally, in Ripon I stayed in a 'Biker Friendly' pub (she rides a VN800 and he a ZZR1400) that has new management and refurbished bedrooms. They asked me to put a word in for them so I will: It's The Ship on 01765450583
I did all this on the return because I wanted to take the Macclesfield-Buxton-Matlock-Derby route through the Peak District but took a wrong turn at Whaley Bridge, went straight to Buxton missing the Cat and Fiddle section altogether!
No matter, I stayed off motorways until the M42 at Tamworth so didn't do too badly and will just have to go back - when a bit cooler though!
Just got back from Plymouth on the Hardley - phew twas warm (not saying what I wore or you will all get on my case) but suffice to say it wern't much.....
A combination of comfort and safety is what is required. I rode into Exeter today in my Kevlar jeans and a leather jacket. Not enough comfort!
A friend e-mailed this comment today after we discussed the purgatory of riding in this weather:
"I bought a jacket from the BMAD weekend a couple of years ago. It's halfway between one of these body armour string vests for motocross and a jacket.
Tight fitting with body armour but all the large panels are thick nylon netting with thick cordura holding it all together ... Bloody great in this weather. It's like riding in a Tshirt which I really miss... Blatting around on my 125 in shorts and a Tshirt wearing a piss pot helmet and no gloves.
It's also got a large zip pocket in the back with a waterproof outer you can slip on when you're in an Indonesia monsoon."
I don't know what it was but will ask more. Still doesn't overcome the sweaty sphericals syndrome though
Nice out there just now, but the long grass does give the badgers somewhere to hide so they can tip motorcyclists off their steeds.
I didn't know about this until I looked at the footage later as they had caught me up by the end of the lane. We managed to keep cool by keeping moving.

Long grass + hard hidden ruts = fallers. Mind you had a few offs in the 6-10* foot waves off Goodrington On the kayak
* wheelie will back me up lol
