Still looking around for an upgrade to the DRZ400s as an Adventure bike, 50% road, 40% gravel tracks, 10% technical, roughly. I had settled on a Husky TE630 but can't find one. Don't want a KTM690 lots of them about with lots of extras but too expensive. Set myself a budget of about £3.5k, the advantage of a cheaper bike is the carnets are cheaper and if you had to abandon the bike it would hurt but not be a killer.
I want to try to find out if there was much difference in the 640E vs 640A other than the faring, larger tank and twin discs on the front, I appreciate the Adventure has a lot more stopping power. What are the brakes like on the 640E? enough to stop effectively with about 40 kilos of luggage?
What I would like to know is, if there is any difference in the: rear sub-frame, service intervals, suspension, what effect the narrower suspension stanchions would have, height of the air-box inlets, the fork rake is 0.5 degrees different does that make a difference?
If it's any help my (wife's) BMW F650GS Dakar only has a single caliper on the front, weighs about 40kg more than the 640 Adv and stops no problem even with fully loaded luggage, so I doubt braking would be an issue on the Enduro.

I've used a 640 e for a few years now. I personally think that when it was fully loaded up with camping gear etc dual front brakes would have been better but I think this could be a fairly straight forward mod. As you can see I swapped the standard tank for an 18 litre one. Everything else was pretty much standard. good bike in my opinion, no real problems at all
Not 100% sure but i think you may need a set of step ladders to get on one ! Would pay to find out before you travel to far.
Cheers Kev
To be honest, it does not matter, whatever I buy I will have to lower it. I had to lowered the DRZ by 6 inches, cut 4 inches out of the seat and a 2 inch lowering link. I am sure there will be a way.
Hi Nige yep had considered a supermoto as they are lower, it's the availability of off road tyres that will fit super moto wheels that is putting me off. Also how would a 17" front wheel effect the ride-ability off road?

You can get the tkc80's it will be lower, have better brakes, probably better at taking an extra 40kg on the back, better road comfort . I think the only down side would be the 10% of technical. But a steering damper might help.
I've taken mine out with SM wheels in the summer and stopping was the only problem ,but it was on bt45's.
