Higlands = great biking roads!

Elevation changes, hairpins, long sweeping bends, suicidal goats and sheep, mountains, some single track road, sunshine and hardly any traffic.  CRF250X may not be designed as a tourer but it coped admirably and was great fun returning in excess of 65mpg.  I did have 5 litres of unleaded strapped on the back just in case I found the tank range limit.  24hr pay at pump at Gairloch on the way down and a quick top up at Kinlochewe on thye way back.

RE: Ullapool - Shieldaig - Ullapool = great biking road!

Indeed, it is a fine road that I've ridden myself. The main problem I had was having to stop every few yards to take photographs of the fantastic views.

If you do it again go further south from Shieldag, take the Bealach na Ba to Applecross (where there's a 24hour 'community' pump plus a great pub serving the best langoustines ever) then the coast road north back to Sheildag. Camping at Applecross if you need to break the journey.

Cheers,

John

I was training at Torridon for a few days so went to Shieldaig on an afternoon off.  Applecross is the location of the highest minor road in the UK (current UK that is ).  I didn't get that far.

I rode down to Torridon last Sunday and rode back to Ullapool on Wednesday afternoon.  I think the views are more impressive coming back.  Especially just up the hill out of Poolewe when you see the Isle of Ewe.

This week's installment takes us North out of Ullapool to Lochinver and then 20 miles South on single track national speed limit road (if you dare!) and then back to Ullapool via Achiltibuie where the village store was closed.  I got very wet on the way back but not cold..

Here we have the very rare CRF250X Touring Edition with 5 litres of unleaded strapped on the back.  At Lochinver.

I've never been further north than Ullapool so that's new ground to me. I have long wanted to go to Kylesku because the bridge looks nice but also I once read 'The Kerrachar Man' - the true story of someone who inheritted a croft down the loch with no road access. I do plan on getting back later this year to pick up where I left off last time. I'll be on my GS but, fuel range aside, I suspect a small trail bike would be more suitable) but not for the 600 miles of motorway to get there!

Bring one up on a train?  Trailer on the GS?  AA Relay is a very cost effective, relaxing but time consuming way of getting a bike from Devon to Ullapool!

Fab roads up there - I 'discovered' Inverarary year before last (and met the Duke of Argyll) but fuel really is an issue - even in a car, could get caught out real easy on a bike cry

The best tool I could find was in the mirror, I mean this one:

http://www.mapzit.com/PETROL/highland.htm

I know of some which aren't shown but the west coast really is a bit of hit and miss, especially on a sunday out of season.

Nothing to say all of those are still open either.

Could always try this from yell:

http://www.yell.com/ucs/UcsSearchAction.do?keywords=petrol+stations&location=highlands+and+islands

All part of the adventure....
