Dont have one, but have you ever ridden one on the road?
Used to race one Nationally, registered, fully enduro tamed, governor, pipe etc etc, absolutely as docile as a YZ250 could be.
Brilliant full enduro bike.
Trail riding it was a pain in the arse!
If you do get one, I have a WRF 4T wide spread gearbox, which can be fitted to make life considerably better.
Dependant on what you want YZ for, and it includes trail riding, there are loads of better suited bikes.
Racing only, hare and hounds etc, nothing very much better, but it does cost to get to that state.
never ridden a yz 250 on the road, did own a exc 250 2t for a while though.
i race motocross and want to go to a 250 2t. Continue to race mx.
but there are times when tracks and races cancel (alot atm) and want the ability to be able to go for a bit of a trail ride just to be on the bike, even slowly on trails.
also trf events require a road legal bike, as do exmoor events, moor to sea etc.
gonna still be mainly be doing mx but seeing as ill be buying a bike, i may as well get one thats already been registered. i dont care if the suspensions to hard for trails or gearing too agressive etc. etc.

On the bike, not a bad start point!
It isnt a huge lot of trouble to register, loads on forum about it.
If you are lucky you can get a certificate of newness direct from Yamaha and that makes things a whole lot easier.
Thats what I have done in the past, including my current WRF.
Another trick that I used to do with MX on the road, take your standard chain from say 13/50 gearing, get another pair of wheels, rear sprocket at 47 (say) and then you only have to change front sprocket 16 (to match 47), chain adjustment the same and you will have sensible trail gearing, or open hare and hounds etc (Maiden Newton, for example)
Only downside, you have to go through neutral in tight going, but it aint that much of a headache.
