Bit of a cash cow for Austin Vince this is. Quite a few of the trails are illegal, the fine if caught varies from 500 - 1000 euros on the spot fine otherwise bike is confiscated if can't pay. No medical or mechanical breakdown cover. So basically it's £200 for a map of illegal trails and fixed waypoints for 2 days riding.

I know a couple of lads who had problems last year.

I heard it was the speed limit on the trails that was the problem?

Well I participated last year and had no problems whatsoever with any of the trails recommended, speed limits or anything else for that matter. A thoroughly excellent 2 days riding, so much so that I already have my ferries and tickets bought already for 2015.

There's a 12mph speed limit in the Pyrenees park, if the police think you are speeding the fines are pretty big. Never been there myself though!

Rode across the length of the Pyrenees from east to west last July didn't see too many rozzers, great riding and scenery.

Sounds good. Austin seems to have a way. Did you hear many folk bitchin at the event Or since?

I did hear that some people felt that the event wasn't good value for money as there's no support laid on and they felt that £200 (or £250) was a lot for essentially just a roadbook or checkpoints and a map (not marked up), that might have caused some animosity that people are now venting in other forms.  I think that some people don't appreciate the time and effort that goes into developing a booklet like that - for me it's about the event, the atmosphere, the preparation of the maps and the people, rather than what tangible things you get for your money.  He's very clear about the lack of support well before people would commit to buying a ticket, so really there's no excuse for expecting any more than is provided.

Regarding the speed limit, I don't recall that one was communicated to us, but then as we're essentially riding independently it's up to us to ensure that we ride within the local regulations, just as we would have to if we weren't on the event.

I might not take the TTR this year, it was a little wheezy at over 2000m. Otherwise it's a perfect, polite tool for this event; there was probably 5 or 6 of them last year.
