Okay, after marshaling these events for some years, I have decided that I wish to attempt to ride some LDT,S. I am looking for anyone who is willing to mentor me and possibly let me tag along on a couple, until I know what I am doing. I have no idea as to what I need or how best to equip the bike or myself.

I am intending to use my DRZ, as it has a pretty good tank range. But I need to know if I need a trip meter, or any other useful tips. 

Or I could possibly use my modified Suzuki Freewind!

Any advice,will be mostly gratefully received.

Please excuse some of the English, not all of the buttons work on my laptop.

Hi Gruff

As you are probably aware there are two types of LDT's - the 50 to 80 miles one day events, and the three 'big' MCC events (which are more about endurance and with (usually) less challenging sections.

You get a 'descriptive' set of route instructions (usually on A4 paper) and you will need some sort of roller system or other way of being able to read them whilst on the move (in the wet and in the case of the MCC events, in the dark). The instructions will also tell you what sort of section or test is next, and if it has a re-start or diversion for your class.

You don't really need a trip, they really only help when you have a 4 or 5 mile road section to the next junction. 

A lot of people like to ride in a small group which would be something I would suggest you do on your first events. 

Fuel capacity is not an issue as they all organise a fuel stop every 40 miles or so.

I am only up in Ottery if you wanted to have a look at some recent routes, documentation, etc.

Although a tad out of date, the web page here gives a nationwide list of LDTs and Rallies and an indication of what time of year they run Mark.

You can make your own road book holder from lunch boxes, VCR cases, etc but the best unit I found was the Acerbis one - see here It is possible to back light them for overnight trials - LEDs are ideal.

The road books for the MCC Trials are quite long but fit nicely wink

Gruff, if you want to do a couple of fun, introductory, LDTs with no roadbooks etc needed, you don't have far to go.

The Neil Westcott memorial trial, start/finish at Minehead, and the Jubilee trial, start/finish at Ralegh's Cross, are really good events. Treat them as a fantastic trail ride around Exmoor, on ground that is not normally accessible, with a few marked sections thrown in for interest

Plenty of the Devon boys come up for both these events but, if you find yourself short of someone to ride with, give me a shout and I'll hook you up with a group from Zummerzet

Hi gruff I,m hoping to do the lands end, but it might clash with a scramble assuming I can fit it in I hope to try to get a gold this time instead of mucking it up at the first and last section! But I,m thinking of doing it on something wacky ie the norton or the IT! If you do an overnighter, decent lights are required - my grandads advice was that twin aceteline lamps are essential! but if you don't have those a six inch bates type lamp is usually better than the usual plastic lights although the glass drz s light isn't so bad, or you could think about extra led lights.


OH and don't forget to practice with an mt43 front and back!


or we could take a sidecar outfit .........

So its settled then. It looks to me that there is a lot of interest in the east Devon area. I think that we should all get together and discuss our next move for the TRF LDT team.

Dan I have ridden chairs and I may just know where there is one, but I am not sure if i want to go down the road to that form of lunacy again!

This is a simpler device but I have used one for the last ten years and its perfectly adequate for one day events.

A lot of regular rider have made an Acerbis look alike with a clear lidded plastic / tupperware box with 15mm plastic piping and push on blanking plugs as the rollers.

Good find jt but the "road books" used by the MCC (and most local LDTs) are A4 sheets of paper with printed instructions and that holder is for the pucca A5 item so only 170mm wide cry

LDT' s are really good fun been doing them for about 12 years on and off .Ive even bought bikes especially for them ( when I was more competitive ) like the Beta Alp 200 and moved the footpegs back for better grip ! and the Gas Gas Pampera .The one thing you will need is trials tyres fitted front and back to comply with the regulations . I recommend Pirelli MT43 as they give the best grip and road manners. I have used Michelin and IRC trials tyres in the past ,they do grip better in the sections but are hideous on the road ! Good luck as I said previously they are always good fun and everyone seams friendly.Just remember keep you feet up ! biggrin
