If you like the idea of a powered bicycle I would steer more toward electric rather than petrol.
Im pretty sure that with any kind of petrol motor you "technically" need a number plate etc. to not break the law (in public). Which also comes with all the trimmings of a motor vehicle, like having it seized and crushed if you stray, needing an MOT and getting points if not 100% legal.
With electric there is a clearly defined power output that doesn't need any of that, plus you can take it on bridleways and cycle paths.
Admittedly with elec range is an issue, but you can get elec bicycles with better range than my pampera (which as you saw is dismal ). Plus you can charge them at home and never need to do an oil change! Its not like you're stranded if you run outta juice either.
If you like the idea of a super light trail bike here are a few others to look at:
Ossa Explorer 280i
GasGas Randonne
Scorpa TYS125/175. or SY125/175
Scorpa Sy250F (has to be an F)
KTM freerides
Most of those are 75 to 80kg dry where the Pamp is about 90.
That brings back memories, me and my brother build one years ago with a Honda 50cc spider engine. The amount of times I burnt my legs on the engine and exhaust!! Good fun. Build quilty was a bit hit and miss and brakes was OK up to 15 km p/h . lol. Would it be better with the engine mounted above the rear wheel to give you the wheelie option.....
mountain moto 190cc fx5 comes in at 56k that's about as light as it get's for a real off road with a motor would love to see one in the flesh could you get one past a msva test it's been dun with pit bikes

For what it's worth, the KTM 350 Freeride takes a lot of beating as a trail bike. I've recently acquired one, ridden it twice in the UK and just got back from 5 days offroading in L'Ardeche, France. It was superb!!
We covered about 350 miles, 20 of them on tarmac, the rest were forest roads, tracks, roots, loose stoney climbs and descents, rocky climbs and descents, stream crossings, logs, the lot!! The Freeride coped with everything thrown at it with ease. The only downside is the fuel tank range which at 50mpg is stupid for a bike marketed as a trail bike. A single 1 litre fuel bottle was sufficient for the times I ran out. I can live with that.
For comparison, my previous bike was a CRF230, owned for 4 years which did everything I wanted from it, it went anywhere. The Freeride does it all but with more life, better suspension and steering and more comfort. I did lower the suspension so I can get feet on the ground if necessary.
Bob (you know who you are) it is now run in!!

If it makes you feel better my pampera is good for about 75 miles including reserve. The only hiccup in an otherwise superb bike, but tough to fix with no bigger options on the market.
the top one might be my best option, i think thats a 3L and they do a 5L too.
First i want to try fitting a GasGas EC tank, which is the same in a lot of ways to a pampera one so i might get lucky. Ive also thought about getting one fabricated out of ally or steel to fit under the side panel opposite the exhaust, but imagine it would be pretty expensive. Ive no idea what that sort of fabrication costs.
