Hey guys joined the forum just before Xmas when I had a Kle 500, but unfortunately that bike is no longer running . Is now in bits and hopefully going to become a little project bike. So I'm now on the lookout for a new one. I'm new to trail riding so don't want anything to crazy, was thinking something like a ttr 250 or Drz 400, they seem to be a good starter bike from what I can make out ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated on what to get and what to stay away from. I've got a budg of ar £1500.
Hi Damo. I have a ttr and have used laning for 3 years. It's reliable, parts are easy to get. (Totally TTRs) and popular. It's quite tall and the power won't scare the c**p out of you. There's one at the mo at Treen in Crediton. I don't know anything about it or them. The only thing about mine is its electric only, I would prefer to have a kicker too. It's a safe choice!!!

TTR and DRZ are both great bikes, DR350 and 250 also, XT225 Serow, KLX250
These are all electric start trail bikes that arent too heavy and wont need tons of maintenance. As a general rule the bigger CC bikes are beter on the road, but you pay for that with extra weight in the lanes (some DR250/350's and KLX's are kick only)
Electric start is great if you are starting out as you drop the bike fairly often and it will get you moving again with no fuss, but some kick start bikes are great like the XR250 and XR400. They can be a right bsatard to start if you drop them and don't have the knack tho
Buy the best condition bike you can, you will be glad you did!
Cheers guys, Glad to hear I'm on the rite track with the two I've already read about, and thanks for info of the others 👍 I did see the one in crediton on the net. I'm away at the mo, but will try and go to see it on the weekend. Will keep you posted on what happens and hopefully see a few of you out in the lanes soon. Thanks again and if you hear of anything please give me a shout.
Cheers Damo .
i only started lanin last summer and picked up a 2012 KTM XCF 250 4 stroke, looked a bit intimidating to start with but really impressed with the characteristics of the bike. it seems to behave how i want it to, just have to ride a gear higher than you'd think. not sure if you'll get one on your budget though!
if i was to start again id probably go for something lighter, like the new Beta 300 xtrainer!!
Cheers for the advice buddy, yeah I knew my budget would probably limit my options a fair bit, but having 3 kids their toys come first lol. I'll be keeping my eyes open and hopefully be able to add a little extra cash as time goes on.
Cheers Damo
Hey Steve thanks mate but I think I'll probably be trying to get hold of something with electric start, unless it's a real good price. Any idea what he's asking buddy.
Cheers Damo
It's got the well regarded Suzuki DRZ engine, WP suspension and is lighter that the Suzuki DRZ. The electrics can be a problem but I've had mine from new (09) and the elec faults are usually associated with the wiring loom rubbing in a few places. I've got these sorted now. Importantly, they've got the old electric start. No kick start though, but I've never needed it!
