I have reported this as libel.
clearly they are mountain bikers on push bikes, (I guess as they are wearing full helmets the idiot who reported on this assumed they were motorbikes) and the reporter is just flinging mud to see where it will stick. any rider who cannot control their horse when it is faced with a push bike clearly needs to improve their riding skills. how a creditable publication can make the mistake between push bikes and motorbikes is beyond belief. I have requested an apology.

at a recent horse event I was marshalling I asked one of the organisers about the noise of the bikes and he said if a rider cant control a horse when its faced with a motorbike, they shouldn't be riding. and that's from the person who runs a horse club!

Funny how there is no audio of the event?  probably deleted so you cant hear the reving of the engines on these mountainbikes!!!   maybe they had spokeydokeys and that's why they thought they were motorcycles!

The website/newspaper layout is exactly the same as the Plymouth Herald. From seeing this article the standard of 'news' reporting on the Cornish version is equally as poor as the Herald's - also quite an old video, 2014?

Well after reading the comments on the plymouth herald site.. i now feel a waste of space that is considered chavvy that should be milked within an inch of my bank account by the police!!

Are we really that bad in the eyes of the general public?

No and never have been. Sadly there are a vociferous minority in any pastime who feel that their narrow minded opinions are worth shouting from the roof tops. Now, in the advent of the internet, there's another blight among us and this in the troll who are never happier than when they can hide behind the anonymity of their keyboards and tap out vitriol to any audience they feel may be insulted. But, of course, the worst and biggest offenders against the harmony that we sensible bikers enjoy with most lane users are the press who have for centuries exaggerated a story for the sake of sales (or now online viewers). This highly offensive and cynical regurgitating of an old story purely for their gain needs to be countered.

Happy New Year!

John

Plenty of horse riders could criticise the horse rider seeing this ,the horse is upset by the bikes twice early in the video. A horse can whip round 'on a sixpence' and even the most experienced will come out the 'side door' sometimes, unfortunately for this rider he's quite quick the third time he spooks and she's lucky she didn't get hurt more. There's no attempt seen by the rider to stop the horse's behaviour through riding him forward stronger or give him a little encouragement, he basically runs back to his friends. He's a flight animal and riding off in front he loses the safety of his companions . Unfortunate incident for the rider but riding in a bike park it's no surprise to meet a few cyclists who stopped. Some horses can be helped by de-sensitising them to tractors, bikes etc , the more they see they generally will pay less attention to . The rider could have also dismounted for a few minutes to give the horse some confidence , and reduce the chance of an accident- loose horse and falling off. Its a good trick with a young or unconfident horse in a sticky situation.

Look like mountain bikes to me. Just seems she has an easily spooked horse that could've thrown her for a dog, runner or paper bag blowing in the wind.

I see little has changed in the 10 years or so I've been away from trail riding!

Well done Jane for some non judgmental well informed comments. My daughter rides horses and I ride bikes so I can say there is good and bad people involved in both. It is refreshing to hear from a well informed angle that can see both sides, its also important to recognise that 99% of horse riders that we stop for are really grateful, and every time we do, brownie points are well and truly scored :)

Talk about be irresponsible, coming out of beer yesterday with Nick and company, two horses were being led up the street and we approached slowly and waited for the horse leaders to make some passing room only to be overtaken by a car driver going like a bat out off hell, bloody idiot. I made my usual polite signals to the car driver !!! (Certo-Cito)

the reply to my complaint. why did I expect more than this?

I write further to our earlier email regarding your complaint about an article headlined Horse spooked by illegal motorbikes on popular Cornwall Bissoe trail throws mum to the ground, published by The Cornishman on 28 December 2016.
On receipt of a complaint, IPSOs Executive staff reviews it to ensure that it falls within our remit, and represents a possible breach of the Editors Code of Practice. The Executive has now completed an assessment of your complaint under the terms of the Code. Having considered the points you have raised in full, we have concluded that your complaint does not raise a possible breach of the Code.
You complained under Clause 1 (Accuracy) that the article was inaccurate because the video did not show any motorcycles. The article included quotes from Richard Bradley who said that his family encountered a group of motorcyclists while riding on the Bissoe trail. Mr Bradley was also quoted as saying that his wife was thrown from her horse after being spooked by the sound of the motorcyclists engines. While we note that there are no motorcyclists shown in the video, you are not in a position to dispute Mr Bradleys position that they caused the accident. We therefore concluded that your concerns did not raise a possible breach of Clause 1.
You are entitled to request that the Executives decision to reject your complaint be reviewed by IPSOs Complaints Committee. To do so you will need to write to us within seven days, setting out the reasons why you believe the decision should be reviewed. Please note that we are unable to accept requests for review made more than seven days following the date of this email.
We would like to thank you for giving us the opportunity to consider the points you have raised, and have shared this correspondence with the newspaper to make it aware of your concerns.

Best wishes,

Isabel Gillen-Smith

This stinks!

You should let them know that as a motorcyclist you are in a minority group, one that is sometimes misrepresented. The manner of the reporting of this incident by this newspaper and the dismissal of your complaint is clear evidence of an unacceptable bias against all motorcyclists, I cannot accept their findings, they are plainly ridiculous They accept that there is not one motorcycle shown in the video and claim that the incident was caused by a noise from a motorcycle, yet mysteriously there is no sound in the video? Why is that, surely that must arouse suspicion? They are willing to support the word of one person yet viewed with an open mind the video does the exact opposite and reveals the accuser as a liar!

Perhaps someone should contact the paper with a story of being a walker and getting trampled on by an out of control horse and send them a video of something completely different, maybe a scene from the Bull running in Pamplona. After all, it would simply be our word against the whole of equine kind, why wouldn't they publish?

Can I buy this "news" paper in Devon? I am running low on toilet paper.

Tbh the longer I live out in the sticks the more and more I come to despise horse riders. There are three horse "skools" not far from here where hooray Henry's "female" siblings hang out and cause mayhem. They are ably supported by mostly rich parents and yuppies and every now and then we are subjected to hordes of townies blocking the roads with horse boxes hitched up to their Chelsea tractor. I am not surprised that this "rag" reported a complete fabrication of the truth and totally masking the inability of this idiot irresponsible woman who had a dangerously out of control horse seriously compromising public safety and this rag appears to endorse her foolish behaviour by the reply received.

Most the horses around here seem to freak at just about anything you can come up with. Tractors, cars, motorcycles etc are a given but Black bin liners, a walker with a hat, maybe a Jack russel (yeah like its 6 inches high and gonna rip the horses throat out). A pebble, they are dangerous too. Its ridiculous I no longer switch my engine off on the Blackbird as its standard pipes and quiet through fear of not being able to beat a hasty retreat should Shergar decide to flip out.

I lost count of the times I have came very close to having me, my bike or my pickup being kicked but a loonie horse. Lastest thing is ride your horse down a really icy road, because we all know horse shoes are really good on ice and of course totally safe for horse and rider. It should be noted there are a lot of horses ridden around here.

Last run in was a hunt, they blocked the entire road for 2 miles not letting anyone past, two quad bikes unregistered with between 3 and 4 children clinging onto them were weaving up and down the road with them. All of the 30 plus riders were women mostly young, bar the nob in front. Not that it matters but heyho does make me wonder. I not against Fox hunting although I do think substituting a Lion for a Fox in a closed off field might even the odds up.

The list of horse riders stupidity is endless as I encounter them virtually every time I go out, they leave pile of horse poo everywhere and make walking down certain lanes impossible without wading through a ton of horse poo, its literally that bad in places and when wet is a skid hazard. They hack the footpaths they are not supposed to be on to pieces. Ride out late evening when it is dusk without no hi vis at all and dark clothing (what the hell are those stupid baggy trousers about anyway) and then have the notion it is okay to give you a ticking off for not seeing them when its half dark, they are wearing brown and a brown horse and standing in a hedge, cos we all know how hi vis that is.

Now you might get the impression I am anti horse, well tbh i am when it comes to the busy narrow lanes around here. I didn't used to be but they have little by little caused more and more misery around here and it is purely for leisure so their activity. As Chris once quoted on Eggheads, horses are for pulling carts and feeding hungry Frenchmen, amen to that.

I will not be surprised if I get a ticking off for posting this up on here and it probably will get deleted or moved into the naughty corner as it is not politically correct, but it is a fact. Biased I agree but I have had enough of them and its about time they were severely legislated for by laws ensuring that riders and horse are competent when in a public place (ie other than a field closed to the public, at least 16, insured and paying a fee for the use of the roads, made to wear helmets by law not just the kids and always have hi vis on rider and horse to a minimum unless they can genetically engineer a horse to be fluorescent yellow, although orange will be okay.

Most of the horse riders I meet on my rides are very pleasant but I do think that they should all have insurance and have passed a test to walk down a road.

I agree, most are. A few I know ride horses. Here there are far too many and many are incompetent and too young to be out on the roads as they don't have any road sense or training

Paul's comments are justified but please do not blame the horse, if it were not for humans they would be in a field happily munching grass and not on the road causing issues. I know many horse owners including my partner who agrees that well trained horses/riders 99% of the time can handle any situation thrown at them, take the horse events we support as members of the trf very rare to see a horse misbehaving.

To be able to ride or drive a motor vehicle on a highway you require training and a test to prove competence not so in the horse world, my question is why not ?

I think the complaint should be followed up to the IPSO - blatant lies and sensationalism by a worthless 'reporter' who wants their mouth washing out with soap .
