The 3rd WooHoo LDT will be held on 23rd February 2019 by the South Devon MCC. Entries and Regs will be out in January 2019. The course will be about 65 miles in the S Hams starting at The Avon Inn, Avonwick with about 30 sections using many green lanes and private land.
Volunteers are always needed for observing, as part of the course opening group or the back marking group or just helping out.
For those of you who don't know :
Observing is standing at a section and noting how many marks each rider loses by putting a foot on the ground. Some sections are by the roadside or green lane side and others are well offroad across private land, when a trail bike would be useful for access. Observing a section should take approx 2 hours, depending on the severity and rider's skill . A small cash inducement is offered. Even better, if you volunteer to observe at an early section and then a later section - two birds with one stone
Course openers are a group of at least 4 riders, about 30 mins in front of the competitors, who make sure there are no obstructions, signs haven't been taken down, gates open, etc, etc. They also make sure that an observer is present at each section, if not then one of the advance group would have to stand in until the observer arrived.
The back markers chivvy along any sluggish competitors, pick up signs, section markers, etc. Also help broken down competitors where possible.
Any volunteers can ride the sections during the ride and compete by arrangement.
Please let me know if you're interested on this forum or by pm.
Thanks, David

I have a friend that is interested in doing LDT just wanted to double check if it was beginner friendly. Thanks
Although I am not involved with the Woohoo ldt I know from laying out sections for the Moor to Sea that organizers will usually try to set out sections in such a way as to make them passable for all riders with footing so as not to hold up the event or put people off with impassable obstacles for all but the most skilled riders. A good section will allow a top rider to show their skill by keeping feet up while others of lesser ability are still able to paddle through.

It must be remembered that it is a "trial" and some parts are more technical than might be expected on a normal trail ride. That said, 202-306 (devils Steps) is down for a couple of sections and is one of the more difficult ones, to give you an idea. There is a bypass around that if you don't fancy your chances....
A beginner would find most of it rideable by paddling but would need a good level of fitness as it's less physically taxing if ridden feet up. Some of the liasons may be found to be arduous by a beginner, particularly on the private land.
We have set it out to fall somewhere between the Moor to Sea and the 10 Tors, probably nearer to the M-T-S. The route is about 65 miles with 30 sections.
Most of the sections are on private land so there is likeley to be a bypass if needed, although we haven't prioritised that. You will certainly be riding on land not normally accessible.
Hope that helps, give it go, it will be fun

I second that. Long distance trials can be viewed as a day out trail riding on land not normally accessible with the sections actual length overall being incidental compared to the wonderful riding of the liaison links. Last time I rode the Moor to Sea I made no pretense at trying to clean the sections and footed most so as to able to enjoy the rest of the days riding.
Many thanks to the TRF members who gave assistance at this event, it couldn't run without you !!
the event was a resounding success from the feedback we have received and I trust you enjoyed your day too. The weather was very kind to the competitors so the going was easier than anticipated when we laid the course out back in the wet weather .
Initial calculations indicate that a donation of £1000 should be able to be made to a deserving charity, probably the Devon Air Ambulance so it's a win-win situation all round.
better start planning next year's route I suppose ...........
