TET running through Devon.

Just wanted to see what thoughts are from everyone in the TRF about the new TET route heading from Salisbury to lands end and back.

do we think this is a good thing or could this bring its own bag of issues?

Seems the usual way I do it isnt working. Quick google for trans European trail will show you the way I the site
The trail is a great way to explore Europes byways. Just means increased traffic and corrosion.
Though Im not on face book I believe it goes by the name the great western trail

m.facebook.com/TheGreatWesternTrail/

Theres a link for all you Facebook users.

I just hope most people using this follow the codes of conduct ect and dont cause any longer term damage to the use of the roads and byways we fight for!

Good grief! I just tried to download the .gpx file to look at the route but what a convoluted and confusing set of web and FaceBook pages!

I can't see anywhere that you can download the file or to sign in/register if that's what you have to do to get access confuse

Can anyone advise the correct procedure please?

SP has ridden it all. I thought it went more round the North coast, but don't quote me.

Its all very southern and doesnt touch the north Devon area at all. There is a 3 parter on you tube that makes it seem theres lots of road work.

I think they have missed some great lanes from the north Devon area.... it could be a good thing though!

A lot of it is road work, when you plot the route out..on a map.
Shame they did not engage with local Trf groups to make the southern section better
but prehaps this was a good thing...

Very little happens on the TeT forum....it all happens on the Fb group..

I thought Jimmy Kawasaki had created it?  Whoever did would have definitely left out sensitive or unsustainable routes as it has to be all year rideable by all sizes of bikes.  Although the TET mantra is "light is right" a lot of riders still insist on lugging big 1200s around the trails.

Yes you have smile

I've imported it into Memory Map and even passed it through Jim's tracklog to run sheet software which showed it took in 147 Devon lanes, 35 Dorset and 15 in Somerset (I don't have Cornwall loaded).

In the main the lanes used were 'legal' but there was one 'white' in Devon (192-328) and a TRO in Dorset (193-237 although that was for maintenance work so may have been lifted by now).

Cheers,

John

Kevin, it's what I use.

Memory Map (MM) on my laptop to view the DGTRF overlays and plot my routes, then I send the chosen route in .gpx format to my Android phone, where I view and follow on the free ViewRanger (VR) app, with £8 worth of VR maps downloaded.

Once you've bought your MM mapping, send an email to John Leah including your TRF membership to obtain the overlays.

You can then view all our recorded lanes and also the TET route to see where it goes.

Thanks John for the route, The Compton Mud Plug on a fully loaded GS, should be interesting.

Jimmy fully researched the lanes before creating it. Ive raised the whitey with him as I cant see it on devons highways map. I suspect it will be amended unless he knows something we dont.
Hells lane/shutes lane in Dorset is not TRod. Despite the misleading sign the locals put out.

I wouldnt worry too much, the routes 30% lanes and anyone who knows the area or is DTRF will use much more interesting lanes. Remember its been created as a scenic tour trail, so anything you average rider on dual sport tyres wont get down, has been left out.

I dont think more than 50 riders rode it last year so dont worry about 1000s riding it. Most TET page members are all wind and piss and just ride their GS 1200s to Starbucks at weekends.

however if you see anything youre not happy with or theres a lane that may not be idea, let me know and Ill pass on the information.

I'm going to ride the great western trail in a few months, just prepping my bike, but I'm going to join the trail at tipton st john and create a smaller loop, will keep you updated, still think it is 400 mile loop

That's a much easier way of getting the TET route, especially if you're running ViewRanger on your phone.

From the TET app, you can simply download the full UK TET, split into 10 track .gpx files, and open them in VR.

Good spot Russell.
