Some time ago i just wanted to get out and do a bit of a ride and fancied doing a bit of the french Tet.in January (Boss said yep,Thats me .) so i posted around on some forums if any one had a French topo map.
Simon P replied as did someone else..I told him i was going Newhaven/Dieppe ,his reply was its flat and boring to join the main route, after a chat and a cuppa,He said i'll join you,if you dont mind,,,,but can't do it till end of January..so a date was set...Portsmouth/Leharve then,,,!!
I booked the Brittany ferrys Econime service)..£123 x 2 return,4 berth cabins aswell,,, (sat 25th to sat 1st Feb,,,Midnight ferrys ) Ride up...
I'm on my 690 R..Simon on a Brand new Ajp Pr7....(Simon might fill you in on the bike later on its good points and ? )
Simon & myself decided on a get to know you ride out,so a date was set and we dually did have a good day out,
all sorted out and we never fell out or off......
So a few things to sort sort out, minimum luggage taken,( think very minimal !! ) Bob-lov Bt-S-3. Headset (so we can chat .. )£25 Ebay specials...dam good it is aswell....
Main aim,is to get as far away as possible before we have to return to Le harvre...
Had pleasant ride up in the fog and mist, and the cool weather, but being layered up before hand is all good,
Up to Portsmouth at a steady pace, into Mc Ds near the port, Simons chicken nuggets came with a Big Mac as an extra, so i had that with aswell with my Big mac meal..
Fuel station is next to the port entrance so filed the tank uo there, both bikes are using roughly the same amount..
Monday,,,sunny all day... Of the boat, 20/30 mins, road then on to lanes all day, 50/50% all day, fast green lanes. Mostly small back roads joining the lanes up, brilliant day. No badgers. One puncture 3rdish lane. Lol. Mousses all the way... Both on michelin trackers tyre.. Best days riding for month's..!!!
Stonking day on the TeT route,
Flooded river crossing and a slippery pedestrian arch bridge with the center missing,.. Looong green lanes, fast tracks.
70% off road.. Luving it but very expensive, not for tight wads on a budget..
Wedensday, Overnight rain makes the trails very slippery and i fall several times,( nothing unusuall there then ), in one spot i lose the bike and it goes right into a slippery bog of clay gloop with shale missed in for effect...
One hour later after removing all the luggage, laying the bike on its chain side ( more on that ) and dragging the front wheel around just to point it towards the track, i am only feet away..The clay is that soft our boots sink up to the tops.and it sticks like poo to a blanket and your lifting several kilos of clay each time attached to them.
I am too knacke@ so ride it out,so Simon gives it all the wellies he can muster and he gets it out. Bike is plastered in the stuff,so its off to find hotel accomadation and a bike wash first...and ourselves !!
Washed the bike off, notice the pads have worn out,,,brand new before trip aswell,,,not good..into a hotel,we are the only occupants after a local phoned the closed hotel...!
bike dealer close by according to mr Garmin.
Thursday...raining
Into said bike dealer,no can do,. He rings ktm in Orleans.. it wasent close, yep they can fix it..siesta time 12 till 1400 hrs..!!! off we go in the rain..Simon collects another puncture 300 mts from the dealer.....no problem, not quite flat so go there to sort it out...
Its siesta time, but a person comes out or from Mc Donalds as Simon is fixing the puncture,He knows all about the problem,we look down and notice some chain rollers have dish shaped so new chain required aswell ,We have a discussion and Simon says the Tet is mud on down from where we left off,so we elect to return back to Le Harve, but do the tet in reverse from our monday nights accomadation..Ferry booking changed..Pay the dealership they fixed it,one mechanic did come out and tell Simon i had a puncture, till he explaind i was running mousses...
Thursday.. Up brekkie and on the Tet in a mere 2mls.. Have a slight fall but ok....bit further on and travelling at a not too fast a speed i have another in a lane.Shooting pain in the ankle... Simon lifts the bike of me as i cant move, mentions that the bits look at a funny angle, but i can walk...just,rotate ankle just, wiggle toes yep...
So after abit of RnR off we go for more lanes, but it becomes obvious to me that i cant put any pressure on the ankle joint. so we abandon this and head to the port, into a car wash on the way up,ankle not to bad, swollen but okish now...wash the mud off to look presentable to pc plod, Fill with Mc Ds and then petrol.... we both aggreed not ro remove the boot till on the ferry. No french hospital for me just incase..... Booking office.tick...customs...Haa no starter working,Simon was first through...i,push the bike away,go find simon, eventually elect for a tow start, bike fires up and i leave it running.atleast an hour or more later its just us left...swear words going on...
Hobble to the cabins,no lift, escalator not working either.3rd deck up to the 6th,chuffing long way boot off,yep its swollen but not black,,so just a bad sprain then....
Time to get off, bike starts on the switch,we both agreed that he should head home straght away..for another matter... i get home around 1300 hrs, ankle hurts but not that much but its still hurting though...Hospital naa..leave it another day...
Sunday.. Tiverton hospital,,, xray confirms i have broken it...Darn....or something like that... The nurse said..THAT BY LEAVING MY BOOT ON SAVED IT FROM FURTHER DAMAGE...
ALSO FROM ME,GET GOOD QUALITY BOOTS,MINE ARE TECH 7s,so saved me from further injury...now have a 6/8 weeks recovery...
A BIG THANKS TO SIMON MY RIDING BUDDY,WITHOUT HIM I COULD NOT HAVE MANAGED.....HE NEVER ONCE MOANED AT ME...well he might under his helmet.... CHEERS SIMON...YOUR A STAR

We're planning on doing that in May. Also from Le Havre. Hopefully it will be a bit drier. How far in miles did you manage each day? Did you pre book hotels before you left home?

Miles,
not sure as we stopped around 3/30 ish each day and started looking for a hotel..
Hotels..
Nothing booked, Simon rang the first hotel as it looked closed, lady came out and let us in 50 no brekkie, just us two.
Second night, same again but there was a motel close by, 55 i think, probably spent all in 100 there all toghther food and lodging.
Third night.
66 and no tea cheapest the tourist office could find was 88...!!
Mc donalds for tea.
Fourth night, same again,
A local rang the owner and she appeared at the door.., food at a Chinese opposite.. Us two only again.
Fourth night, back at the motel again. But wiser on the costing. In opinion, camping will be a lot cheaper, with booking hotels your time limited to getting to an end point,
Section eight is dead easy in the dry, as section one would when dry.
If anyone wants more info, pm me a number so we can chat..
Cheers for the info on your accommodation. We're planning on a loop using 8, part of 1, then part of 5. So, Le Havre to Dieppe, then on the road back to Le Havre for the ferry.
Not interested in camping. Too much kit, too hard on the ageing body, and weather dependant.
Unlike you, we're hoping to pre book our accommodation, although that has it's own drawbacks. We're also finding it hard to find places in the right location that suit our needs (secure bike storage being the main issue).
Can anyone suggest something near Dreux, and also Beauvais that they have experience of? It's a long shot I know!
All the places we stayed at had secure parking behind closed doors,
And another where we stayed at twice had,, who we belive a security guard...
My Montana says.i travelled a total of 836 mls,French side only...
Fuel staions could also be a problem as there not where you might think there might be some...( if u pass one fill up )
I used a combination of cash and a Zero/no fee loading credit card, petrol staions are a combination of both,on sundays its card only..
Hi mike sounds and look awesome sorry to hear you had a little mishap I might look into this myself how did your mates AJP go ? Does he like it?
Would the bulk and weight of camping gear made riding more difficult ? (I know conditions were against you)
I down loaded the gpx routes a couple of months ago. I've been creating my route by "overwriting" sections of the TET 8 (all of it), 1 and 5 (parts of them). Do you think that's the latest version?
Steve,
Unless i get to see it on the TeT page that there is a new version i would go with your version,it has'ent altered drastically,
The section with the scrap cars ( No idea on section 8 ) in it,is a pain as there is no way past them, but once you have turned around,it just 10 min easy ride around...
Mark,
Ajp no problems apart from 2 puntures,,,,( run mousses ) did everything that it came up aginst..with no problems....
Camping,
saw several signs for camping,i would imagine if your discreet enough amd tucked out the way wild would be ok...
just pack light...no harder than our lanes...
I ran a pair on my last TET trip.
Never again!!!
Fine when dry and sandy, but so are slicks.
First lane was a tad ****ty and rocky.
Scared me half to death.
IMHO enduro tyre of front, rear not so critical. I run a Gibson at the mo, cheap as chips so can afford to replace each trip.
Michelin Trakkers seem near enough.
All off road handling firstly on the front staying roughly where its meant to be.
Obviously not so good on the road, but like traction control etc etc, it aint a race, make allowances and enjoy the ride.
Simon had Tkc80 on his Ajp when we went for a get to know run, slid all over the place but he rode it well.
We both had Trackers on the TeT,noisey/whiney on the road, they are squirmy on the road, but you get used to it,
off road,just like tractor tyres...
wear rate was very good,i was expecting them to be trashed when i got back, but there still fine...
i would do the same route again and still expect to get home with a little tread to spare..
Trev and I are taking bikes over to Brittany in May (probably road riding only) and I think there may have been some law changes. Did you put reflective stickers on your helmet, carry a high viz jacket etc?
