practicality/reliability

I am after some advise please.

I am looking to purchase a 2010 Honda CRF450 I presume it started as a crosser and has now been made road legal. It comes with a supermoto setup as well as off road equipment.

it has a good write up, can these be constant money pits that should be avoided. I was told "you can't go wrong with a honda"

I will be using it for green lane use mostly with the odd supermoto trip.

I was also told that when these go wrong it's approx a grand to rebuild.

Can you use it - Yes.
Is there better out there - definitely.
If it goes bang, itll be throw away.
I hate to say it, but youd be far better off with a KTM XC or EXC, if you want something quickish.
The CRF250 is better for lanes.
If its been used for MX, itll be due for a true rebuild, most parts have a specified number of hours before replacement, itll be way beyond these hours, cos in MX terms, its old.
Totally upto you, but IMHO, you could spend your money more effectively and have a whole lot less maintenance or repairs.

if it has a centre stand,
grab the wheels, top and bottom rotate them for bearing noise, also to see if there's play.
off the stand .. grab front brake on,to see if theres movement in the headstock, rear on also,
check pads.
general condition, does it look ...looked after....new plastics could hide a hard life before.
fork seals,is there a film of oil after you compess them several times...

Failing all that.......

Ask a mate to come along aswell....and mull it over.....
what he wants and what you pay are probaly two different places..

The X is a far better bet!!
Higher top gear, better on road, softer tune (still faster than any TRF member)

i have an 08 crf 450x and its everything i want it to be and more, perfect for laning and road use but be careful when buying one as some people tend to mess around with them, i had one once that had cams in from a crf450R and it was horrible to ride on the lanes.
personally if i was you i would snap doug's arm off for his.
