Why, Grinder destroyed by plasma cutter??

The other day I wanted to cut stainless with our plasma cutter.

Cleaned off the bench and took the grinder off the bench and put it in the floor out of the way, it was still plugged in and socket turned on.

Set up the plasma cutter and went to do the first cut, pressed the trigger and heard a bang and saw a flash on the floor in the corner of my eye, found nothing wrong so continued using plasma cutter.

I finished with the Plasma cutter and put it away.

Picked up the grinder, it don't bloody work!!

Speed controller blown up!!

The plasma cutter cable/pipe to the cutting nozzle is all sheathed, and was actually resting on the sheathed cable to the grinder.

What caused it?!

Must be an electronics expert on here somewhere..

I would say that is your answer Neil. Despite the fact that the cables are sheathed, the power requirements of the plasma cutter would have produced an induced EMF in the cable to the grinder.

Wrong voltage + wrong place = bang flash.

On a serious note, I use both bits of kit, often on the same job.
Id better be more observant.
Thanks for the heads up!

Approved CEE or TUV sheathed power tools will not impact upon nor create an electro motive force to disturb an unpowered device...it broke and the timing was unfortunate.

The OP said that the grinder was plugged in and turned on. Therefore, not an unpowered device.
