Any Diesel Boffins out there?

My sister has a horse box. It gets hotter than a hot thing and fills with soot

It's a DAF LF250

Her local man is having a tough time with it and seems to be getting very little help from DAF. Here's his latest job report:

Hello Helen, sorry I havent got back sooner. Heres an update as to where we have been and the next stages. The injectors were tested, ultimately replaced. The dpf has been changed, new unit fitted, cleaned multiple times. The valve seats were in very poor condition, cylinder head removed, valves re faced and seats cut. Air and breather filters replaced. Turbocharger removed, variable geometry found to be jammed ( prob caused by other failure), cleaned, freed off and re assembled. Fitted to veh and re calibrated. Daf agent called in to reset all engine parameters and identify any fault... no irregularities found but did remove eco drive. This made truck respond better but created more smoke! Complete exhaust system substituted from another vehicle that has no known problem. Still showing higher soot levels when under load. Exhaust gas pressure sensors checked for accuracy.. no fault found. Delta pressure sensor checked and ports cleaned, manifold pressure sensor also checked, no fault found. Egr valve cleaned initially, substituted subsequently. No change. Vehicle road tested and exhaust temperature monitored to ensure passive regeneration can take place. exh system operating around 100 degt As we are at the moment Helen, commencement of injection is to be checked for accuracy. Boost levels also require checking relative to engine speed etc. If these dont show any marked changes it is likely that we have a fundamental problem with the actual base engine. The irritating thing is that the previous history is known but not in great detail. There must have been a time that the problem began. Many other components are suffering because of the initial fault. Turning it all off can work. Dvsa or manufacturers take a dim view of it. My concern is that it still leaves a fault in place which is unknown currently. I worry about where that could lead to. I will try to get in touch with the company that deletes the system tomorrow and discuss it with them , then get back to you. Im sorry its being such a pain but I really think weve inherited someone elses aged problem . Ill call you soon.

Any radical thoughts?

Ask EletroDiesel if they recommend anyone in the area.

Rats can also be a big problem in farm areas. Have they checked the glowplug control module and examined the pistons.  Constant regen burns out loads of items and the extra fueling can damage pistons on diesels.

lots of soot?

Its not something as simple as a leak between the turbo- intercooler and manifold is it?. Had similar on a SAAB and a BMW. Blows soot everywhere and fouls up the EGR valve.

Solution found!

This had been an ongoing problem since the horse box was built. May be that's why the owners flogged it after just 15,000 miles!

By swapping parts with a similar truck everything was in spec except the inlet air was +8C on the ill truck. It appears that the coachbuilders had redesigned the intake. The result was incoming air that was pre-heated by the exhaust, disc brake and tyre dirt. A redesigned intake (via a snazzy chrome tube) and the job's a gooden. The turbo seems to have taken the brunt of the dirty air and apparently it looks one from 400,000 mile old unit, so will be replaced

Thanks for reading and advice kind folks
