Best way of viewing our overlays on the trails

I think MM on your phone will be the closest to what you want/have been used to.

I'm a fan of AlpineQuest which may suit you as it uses the same maps as Memory Map.
It does take our gpx overlays but, as I don't use them on the phone, can't say which works best so I'll do some tests.

I did some tests and AlpineQuest loads our gpx overlays with those files ending ...RcT.gpx, ...RC.gpx and ...VR.gpx all displaying the lane number at the end of each lane and the comment data when selected (the ...T.gpx format displays the lines but not lane numbers or comments).

Before Christmas I was referred to OZIExplorer < linky here > as some members are using it. Sadly, turkey and mince pies put it from my mind and I didn't follow it up but a quick look now reveals it's an app of great power but, arguably, far more power than our needs require (and I'm unclear on the source of OS maps) but others may wish to take a closer look.

Tell me more abot AlpineQuest John.

I have the 'AQ lite' version on my phone but cannot see a way of importing the overlays. Is that only with the £8.99 AQ app version?

I'm pretty sure it needs the 'full fat' paid for version to install overlays ('placemarks' in AQ parlance). I got mine a long time ago now so can't recall how much it was but as I only bought it as an experiment (we were having issues with installing/reinstalling the overlays in ViewRanger at the time) it won't have been much so £8.99 sounds about right - and, for Memory Map users, there's no need to buy any maps.

I've managed to get my 1:50k MM maps onto my AQ Lite, so the answer is yes.

Although I cannot find my 1:25k MM files on my phone anywhere, si I haven't tried those.

When I tried to load the Land Charges maps, it told me 'this feature is not available in this free version' I might have to push the boat out and buy the £8.99 Pro version of the app!

Yes you can. I found it a bit of a faf, but with the paid app, I now have my 1:50k MM maps, and the lanes overlays displayed.

Unlike the MM app, the overlays are not colour coded by type, they're all the same colour, but the lane numbers are also displayed.

It seems if you do download the 1:25k MM mapping to your MM app on your android phone, it stores the maps in a 'private folder' so you cannot simply access them to use with AQ.

As I have MM on my laptop, I've copied the 1:25 qct file over into my phone, selected that map in AQ, and I am currently downloading the whole huge 1:25 MM file to my phone.

We'll see if that gives me AQ in 1:25.

I've never used Garmin, and am so used to viewing OS maps.

MM app still edging it for me at the moment.

I've not tried putting the overlays on my Montana as i don't use it for trail riding, but I do have OS mapping on it - UK 1:50 scale.

What's really cool is that Garmin have done more that just adopt the map to view it as an image, it can make routes and navigate them (tarmac roads only).

Just for comparisons, on my phone, a recent track and the overlays displayed at the same time on OS mapping on the apps I currently have.

I normally ride with a planned route displayed and the overlays showing in case I want to change my mind. Does the Garmin display the 'line' for the lane,

or just the lane number?

Nope my Montana just has the numbers of the lanes without a line to identify the line of the lane

you can view the lane on the map without a line mate

Hi Neil,

Outdooractive can show multiple tracks at once using what it calls My Map:

To see routes, tracks and points on the main map, you need to add them to My Map, then set My Map to always be shown.
For example, use the lists at www.outdooractive.com, click the M+ on the routes you'd like to see. Or similar with the buttons in the lists in the app under My Page - press and hold to show the check/tick boxes, select those you want to include, then use the bookmark button at the top.
Then on the main map use the 3 dots bottom right, My Map, switch on the enabled switch at the top.

They will look quite faded though, but better than nothing.

However, there is no way to import tracks, just record them - though at present you can import in VR, sync they come across.

I've only had the AQ app for 2 days!

I've managed to get my Memory Map OS mapping onto it, together with the Devon overlays.

I'm just trying to get used to my way around the app, and the different terms used.

I use AQ on the phone to navigate now.

Plan a route on MM at home then send it over.

I have the paid version to be able to import but at £8 this seemed ok to me :)

As i already have the whole uk in 1:50 and 1:25 in MM that i can import as required this was a great deal.

It does not automatically create a tracklog each time you have to start it recording.

It works well for me as i plan routes while i am away and send them from laptop to phone with a cable. No network or wifi required.

Still use my old Memory Map Adventurer 3500 GPS, never failed me.

I've just used Alpine Quest on my phone whilst mountain biking, following a route and making a track. It works on par with the Memory Map app.

The MM app has the advantage of colour coding for the overlays if you've got them.

I'm sure the AQ app will use a 3rd parties MM map files, making it an £8.99 bargain.

I have never felt the need for the overlays on my mobile device as i do planning at home

I think it is nice to able to switch the overlays on mid-ride, maybe planned lane is blocked or maybe you just want to wing it.

MemoryMap was great for that, especially when they finally made it able to 'track up'.. but I'd already moved on to the OxiExplorer app by then.

I would really like to move my OS mapping on to my an Android phone to use via OsmAnd - anyone know how it can be done?
I have the maps in both MM (.qct) and Ozi (.ozfx3) format - neither work with OsmAnd.

Looking forward to learning a bit about mapping at the meeting.

I have purchased alpine quest on my android and some how managed to load all of the lanes into a map that John sent me.

That's as far as I got, I have no idea of how to plan a route with it or how to set it into a navigation system to follow a route.

All I want to do is ride and know where I am going

As with others, had many happy years of using Viewranger and now been forced to transfer to OA.

All seemed fine until I realised that the maps I have previously purchased through VR don't allow 'offline' access through OA unless I'm a 'Pro' member.......perfect for when you lose phone signal.

The last thing I want to do is pay OA for anything I previously had 'included' with VR.

Will need to check out other mapping apps......grumble over. furious

I have the pro for free trial and All you do is download map before going out, top right download arrow.

Assume the same for not pro version!

I am still using Viewranger at the moment though.

I struggled with the whole mapping thing but have got it sorted now.

I purchased the full version of memory map for my android phone and installed the map overlays that John sent to me.

Now they are all on there I just go and change the colour of the lines for the lanes that I want to ride and then follow the compass.

It works very well for someone like me with no clue so cannot be too hard!!

It's a simple system that works well when you have the overlay installed.

Hi all I have been using view ranger since I have been using the overlays with just the standard view ranger landscape map. I know it's stopping this month and I missed the last meeting that probably would have helped with my question, but I do all my plotting and reading with my phone and mount it to my bike.

So I need to find an alternative to viewranger I have been reading alot of recent posts and tried various things but none seem as simple as view ranger.

What would you suggest? I am looking to purchase a 1:50 or 1:25 map too to go with it which I haven't got yet. I'm meant to be leading on the T2T so want to get used to something before that.
