Just a Warning 202-119 Berry Pomeroy Castle, tree down and Shooting.

Went out on my own today, went to go down 202-119, heard shouting behind me while opening the gate to the field, so rode back up to see what it was all about.

He said not allowed through, I asked Why?

He replied after a pause, we are Shooting all through the area.

I replied where are the warning signs then this is a public right of way! He did sort of agree perhaps it should be signed.

Don't know if it is only today or Even at all, but never had a problem there before.

Tree is also down on the embankment that we ride. I planned to clear it but couldn't.

If going up the embankment you can drop down into field to miss tree, but going down, would be difficult to get back up to the embankment without making a mess of field.

I did tell the guy about the tree!

Hopefully all makes sense.

Thanks for the heads up Neil.

I hope it wasn't just an excuse,  I am sure you can't shoot on a public way it would be bloody dangerous even with a couple of signs.

I think it is an offense to discharge a firearm within 50 feet of a public highway, but only if obstructs, annoys or endangers residents or passers by.
It is forbidden to shoot from a public highway. I bet they do not know the lane is a public road. Bet they don't care either.

I once rode a RUPP at Exton on Exmoor sitting down when I would normally stand and ducking too for safety's sake while shot flew everywhere as I acted as a beater shooing the many pheasants taking cover in the sunken lane from the trigger happy toffs in the adjacent fields. Another time passing Willingstone I saw a chap five yards off the tarmac road raise his shotgun and fire vertically then had to dodge the falling pheasant as it bounced off branches over my head as I passed. He waved cheerfully oblivious to the obvious dangers he caused. And while shopping at South Devon bike breakers I jumped when a gun went off nearby then laughed at the sound of falling shot pinging off the chrome on the bikes. All part of living in the countryside.....

In France they stand in the road, guns ****ed and shouldered, blowing songbirds out of the air with gay abandon.

I've had a report of further trees down in the same location, with riders again going around them and churning up the field.

Pic from earlier this year

I'll maybe have a look if I can contact my glamorous assistant.

I am not sure who the farmer is now, as he was giving up this field in April 2023.

Trail riders eh!!
no one wants to stop to sort any problems. Whats it coming to?
killing your own hobby springs to mind especially once land owners get fed up with tyre marks all through the field

rip it up. who gives a sh*t - you will when its fenced off confuse

I must admit we got there and it is I think three 6inch limbs across, time was getting on so went around, no tracks in the field then though, since then, (that was October 22nd) we have had a lot of rain.

Would expect land owners to clear them to avoid churning field up.

I Know you might not agree with that Wacky, but isn't it the land owners responsibility to keep tracks clear?

See what the weather brings tomorrow, might see if I can remove them.

Totally 100% agree with you Neil, tis the landowners responsibility but will they get out there...I argue all the time with the authorities we should 'Bill' them for our volunteer services

I moan at the wobbly hat brigade at the parish meetings too, get out there and do something..and the bloody equestrian lot...get off your arse's, I moan at all of them tho biggrinbiggrin

Wouldn't take much to drop off the bike to remove the obstacles tho would it.. silky saw and your through in no time!!

You do a lot of clearing, spread the word, do some on the next ride out!

Look what Tribey has just completed smilesmilesmile
