As raised at the monthly meet and posted on the FB page, for the 30th Dec I have organised a roadbook event around East Devon. To join in the fun you'll need to be a member of the Devon Trax Trail Riders page on Facebook. (if you're not on FB, just drop me a message on 07842 023 163). Its approximately 140km of green lanes, byways and quiet country roads. Using tulip diagrams to navigate, the primary goal is to reach the end.(where you started) Then, we score by time completed, based on what time the sweeper set two weeks prior to the event on final check ride. Its really easy to do and is great fun. Trails will be suitable for experienced trail riders and will be manageable by most others. With only two or three lanes being potentially tricky due to the damp stuff falling from the sky. Riders will leave individually at one minute intervals but can ride together if they so wish.
Thanks All.
Hope to see some of you on the day on this free to enter, just for fun and self bragging rights event.
I think I've persuaded my wife it's best I don't go to Powderham Castle to look at the Christmas lights so I'm hoping to take part - never road booked before - hoping YouTube can give me some tips on how to read the navigation.
im just finishing a short video on how too, its not great and there are far better you tubers out there doing a great job but its filmed on devonlanes and might be insightful on what to expect.
I too have never done a Road Book event however Tim took me briefly through the format.
Firstly download an app; Rally Navigator and near to the event (day before ish) you will receive the route, this is delivered near to the event to avoid anyone pre running it.
On the day we all meet and set off at 1 min intervals. Its not a race is a nav exercise. The App takes you through each directional change along the whole course. Some runs may be literally yards away from the last.
So its a baptism of fire for myself not only as new to the world of GL but also this form of riding event.
For what it's worth, I did the previous event held at the end of October.
I've had no previous roadbook experience, I've only been riding trails since roughly April this year and I've only been on the road since January this year on a 125cc bike after not riding at all since being a teenager. I'm not sure if you could get much more newbie than that!
That being said it was an exciting and very enjoyable day out getting to see some great places and ride some great lanes around the local area. Reading the roadbook is much more intuitive than it first appears, the best tips I can give are to not overthink the instructions and don't ride faster than you can read.
I'm looking forward to this next one, if you see the 'L' plates do pop over and say hello!
