I went and had a cuppa with my mum this afternoon and we got talking about my grandfather who was a keen motorcyclist. She said, 'I think I have some old photos.
I think they are great, so I thought I would share them
This is outside a garage in Exeter, does anyone have any idea where it was. They had travelled down from Kent, circa 1931. Is the bike a Panther? looks like it has hand gear change.
My Grandfather aged 24 in 1929 outside Western Garage Uffculme. This was his first camping trip away Matchless 250 and his mate is on a BSA 350
1932 and he has built himself some touring comfort now he has to take the wife.
It even extended upwards
Roadside stop, probably down here somewhere, they spent a lot of time in Cornwall on holiday

If youre happy Ill post the pic on the Exeter Memories FB page and see if anyone knows where it is in Exeter, but as its flat Id say Cowick street or Sidwell street are possibilities - Fore St is out!

Superb pictures and real adventures. I was talking to an elderly lady and gent quite a while ago and she told me when they went on a trip abroad in the 50's she used to put a knitting pattern on the back of her husbands jacket and knit most of the time. They travelled far and wide before the ease of going over borders . We got it easy these days I reckon

After a great deal of researching (not all by me I might add!) I think we have found the location. Its Alphington Street, sadly now demolished and under the Boots/ TK Max car park.
No 47 was a chip shop, and No 48 was the Buller Arms, so a good place to stop! The alleyway was the entrance to the coaching stables of the pub, but later became a garage. In the last photo
The photo was taken where it says PH
The Pub is just before the traffic queue on the right, this pic is taken from Cowick street.

Fantastic photos! I don't think its a Panther as they generally had a sloping single. My grandparents used to ride around on a Velocette in the New forest. Its great that people were out motorcycle camping nearly 100 years ago.
