Top Trump Trail Bikes

Should be funbiggrin

I'll start

1 - Gas gas EC 300 - light, agile, torquey motor, powerful + its a looker
2 - XR 250 / 400 - Its a Honda!
3  - WR 250 - 450
4 - TTR 250

Please add your thoughtsbiggrin

Obviously you got number 1 wrong - Husky TE 450, strong motor, precise suspension, light weight. Awesome all round bike and the best looking dirt bike ever made.

So there!

i can see everyone putting their bikes at number 1,biggrin

but if i had to do a list of bikes other than ones i have owned mine would be....

1.wr450 because they seem to be popular and that must mean they are pretty good.
2.xr600 they look like an animal.
3.cr500 as above
4.crf 250, light and powerful
5.ttr600, with a bit of a play around with it i reckon it could be a good dual sports.

you will notice no KTMS or DRZZZZZ'S in my list!!biggrin

Based on which? - cost, capability, reliability, looks, speed, technical capability ..... or all of the above?!

Anyway don't forget the Honda 230?

I think you should rename the title as most of the above are enduro machines nono

Obviously in the Huskies case based on sheer naked brilliance!

And how can we forget the versatile and truly wonderful CRF 230 when there will be (shortly) along,  Ming, Gaschef and Torr to remind us of there undoubted awesomeness!biggrin

being serious for just a moment, think you'll have to include the CRF 230 (and the CCM copy) and (horror of horrors) the KTM 400 EXC in any definitive list.

I need a lie down now.......

RE: Top Trump Trail Bikes - not track bikes

For a trail bike I would apply the following criteria (not in any priority order - just as I think of them):

  1. Easy maintenance with long service intervals
  2. All-day comfortable seat and seating position (pegs and bars)
  3. Decent range on a full tank of fuel
  4. Quiet exhaust
  5. 6th gear to make the inevitable road work more bearable
  6. Electric start
  7. Readily available affordable spares
  8. Lowering kit available for the less-tall rider

I could go on but......................

Does anyone else agree these and, if so, how do the bikes listed already measure up?

RE: Top Trump Trail Bikes

6th gear is nice but only a must with smaller engines I'd say.

Light & stable feel also important as there is no such thing as a standard lane therefore your bike has to instil confidence that you won't fall.

Not wishing to be too pedantic but wasn't Top Trumps all about playing to your bikes' stengths when stating which category?

So: KTM530EXC would be good to play if "power" was the category but lousy if "maintenance costs" were picked.

Similarly, the mighty CRF230 would clean up in MPG, weight, tank range, service costs but would get hammered in "top speed" or "poseur value".hmm

Nice idea though Biffwink

BEST trail / enduro bike I EVER owned.............................

Greeves Pathfinder Enduro..........

used KTMs for traction
Left Bultaco Froneras wallowing in deep mud
easy and inexpensive to maintain
6 speed bullit proof Sachs motor
175cc 2 stroke
and when I was in my late 20s picked me up a few prizes!!!

The Norton P11a and N15CS 750 dessert sleds are still eye candy, but at ŁKKKKKK too too expensive to go laning on!!!!

However for old gits like me looking forward to a free bus pass and respect that is generally given to the elderly..... top trump would be the little Honda CRF230

and the bottom trump, with no points, cudos or even a mention is...............................................

It will never win top trumps but the most important trail bike must be the DT175MX. Its inspired generations to get out their and hit the trails.
Back in 1979 this bike was its own trail bike revolution.

GasGas EC 300 -
  1. Easy maintenance with long service intervals - 50hrs 1 spark plug + oil changes - no valves or shims to adjust
  2. All-day comfortable seat and seating position (pegs and bars) - umm, you can have that one biggrin
  3. Decent range on a full tank of fuel - 70 miles, ample for a ride out
  4. Quiet exhaust - Yep
  5. 6th gear to make the inevitable road work more bearable - 6 speed box + dual mapping = lane friendly power
  6. Electric start - starts first / second kick. although could be an issue in the ravines of East Devon biggrin
  7. Readily available affordable spares - local "ish" dealer
  8. Lowering kit available for the less-tall rider -not needed but you could always wear platforms Brianwink

Honda SL125 Trail...... did a few enduros on one of those in the early seventies!
Although they were called "long distance trials " back then!!!

No he's deffo a 2 stroke fan I recon....just he bought a bleddy Gas Gas cause it looks pretty and matches his truck.....he needs a 300 Katoom instead and then he'll be OK......

I must confess tis a cracking looking bike - but I just can't be to nice about a Gas Gas - or No Gas, Gas Gas in Biff's case......
