A small group of us hardy rambliars were doing a circular tour of the Burrator Reservoir (with the extra long loop at the south to knacker out us oldies!) and we stopped for lunch in the glade by the ford on 201-090. The water was well up and there was no way we could use the stepping stones. Be very careful if you try it on a bike as the current looked very fast!
Anyways up, a big Landy trolled up with jacked up suspenders, bloody great wheels and a car full of grinning youngsters out enjoying themselves. The driver saw us watching and gave us a big grin. We were looking forward to seeing how far up the Landy the water came but he totally surprised us by turning downstream! Showing off I guess but I went down to the river to watch and he seemed to be going well so I went back to my soup.
About 10 minutes later we heard a bit of shouting and a way downstream the Landy's front had dropped into a big hole in the river and it wasn't going backwards or forwards - no winch! One guy was up to his waist in the icy water putting stones under the wheels or some such.
We carried on with our walk but we were all still wondering if they got it out.
If I hadn't been very low on diesel I would have gone back to check.
Youngsters eh?
