The new Continuous Insurance Enforcement says from spring (exact date TBC) all cars, bikes & motor homes must be insured - even if no-one drives 'em. Beware of yours lapsing while on hols or in hospital.
The only way out is to apply for a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) declaring it's not in use.
The aim's to crack down on 2m uninsured drivers bymatching a database of cars to insured drivers. If there's no match, it'll warn people, then fine 'em (see car insurance rules).
Thanks for the warning. What a pile of poo though, forcing people to pay for insurance even though they may not currently be using their vehicle (like me). Rip-off Britain.
Just SORN you vehicle hoops - that is unless you don't have any off road parking in which case it will force you to both tax, insure & MoT your vehicle even if it isn't in use.
Seems petty to me but if doing thing reduces out policies by £30
Oh my god your sooooooooo funny Rich..........like thats gonna happen.......
Like the new euro**** ruling that means girls gotta pay more for insurance - do we really belive that the boys will pay less as a result.....my arse.....
You couldn't write this stuff - I wouldn't feel any less 'violated' is some mugger hit me on the head and nicked my wallet, yet these bastards do it every day and get away with it - and we just let them?????????
What we need to do is actually deter those that break the law and drive with out insurance, not penalise all those that do - it aint going to stop those that don't as they don't give a toss and never will cause we don't punish anyone enough.
Thats it I'm off on one again now - holy cow I'm just so hacked off at paying every thing for those that don't.
Think on this - buy a cheap little bike, don't tax, insure or MOT it.....
Get nicked and what happens? - you lose the bike and get told your a naughty boy by the law.
Odds of being stopped? - well I haven't been stopped on my bike for 3 years. (bet I bloody will now though )
So 3 years of no insurance/tax/mot cost V price of cheap little bike/risk of confiscation...
I'm sure thats a calulation that many carry out with a cheap old banger as well.
Not saying for one second I would - but just making the point that there is less and less incentive to be an honest, law abiding, hard working, contributing member of the community...
Hmmmm, Ive got a couple of bikes that have not been taxed or sorned for many years. One only has the green log book. I have another that has been on a long term sorn for about 10 years and "they" know about it because I was fined when the tax ran out and I didn't sorn it some years ago. I think/hope there is such a thing as an old style long term sorn. I spoke to someone on the DVLA stand at the bike show and they seemed to think it was allright
.....So, for those people (and I'm sure there are alot) who only use their bike/car half yearly (fair weather), are they going to introduce 6 monthly insurance policies??? Coz I be f***ed if I'm paying a full years MOT and insurance to line someone elses pockets!!!! There's a saying/joke..... Q, Why shouldn't we steal? A, Coz the goverment hates competition!! I'm with JT and others... This subject, amoung others similar get me really wound up!!!!
Thanks for the warning. What a pile of poo though, forcing people to pay for insurance even though they may not currently be using their vehicle (like me). Rip-off Britain.
Bureaucracy apart, the powers that be are trying to stop those barstewards who continually drive without licence, tax, MOT and insurance, which is the main reason that the cost of insurance is spiralling out of control. Vehicles that are SORN'd can be taxed online when necessary and driven almost immediately as ANPR cameras should recognise the vehicle as taxed. I keep my VW camper SORN'd during winter months but its always insured even though its parked offroad! Hopefully in time, these minor inconveniences will benefit us all.
I keep my motorhome insured all year round even if only taxed for 6 months...... then it is a £30Ks worth of vehicle! Interestingly the insurance is not valid if a current MOT is not in place... my policy for the bikes is the same.... no MOT,,,,,, , not insured!
And how many of us have inadvertantly ridden without an MOT, simply because you forgot!!! A BIG can of worms seems to have been let loose here!
Slightly off-topic but related all the same, just phoned up Direct Line to update my occupation with them for my car insurance and they charged me £15.90 for the privilege! Robbing b@st@rds! Needless to say I questioned this and was told it was an admin. charge (told them I wish I hadn't bothered phoning, especially as I waited 10 minutes at my cost to speak to someone). Anyway, e-mail complaint fired off to FOS for what it's worth.
When I updated my bike policy with change of address last year they wanted to charge £25 admin - I told them to cancel the policy as there was less that £25's worth of time left on it. They instantly waived the fee in order to retain the opportunity for renewal - I was laughing at them down the phone as well as I wouldn't even give the lady chance to "discuss this with her manager", I just said " No, cancel it" and was told straight away "that's all fine - I've made the change for you".
