The Cornwall Trip

Well I hope you boys enjoyed your day out in Cornwall, the weather was good and the lanes were superb, not as much water around as usual but enough to get a bit muddy in places. Me and Martin arrived at the camp site at nine just in time for a cup of coffee as the Devon boys got suited up. Off we went to do the Bodmin loop taking in the climb at Helland Bridge, too dry to be tricky but still worth doing. Through Cardinham and up Gypsy lane and over to Pink Panther. Bit of fun was had here by all with Brownie and Nick taking up the challenge. Brownie went down hard on the step but picked himself up and with me and Martin pushing and heaving up he went. Similar style used by Nick, get a couple of daft local lads pushing and sweating at the rear and these Cornish lanes are quite easy!!!!
Across the moor next and over to St Neot for the next few, all went well so over to Liskeard via some nice and easy lanes. At Liskeard SOME of us fuelled up and SOME didnt. Five or six lanes around here ending with a tricky down hiller, first badger goes to Mr Hart, busted hand guard and a muddy backside. Next came railway lane, deep mud and stagnant water, not sure what happened in there but had to wait a fair time for all to come out the other end. I think Nick nearly drowned and Harty emerged with a broken clutch lever in his hand. Not to worry, after trying two that Brownie had Rich came up with the goods. By this time Mark on the XR had asked about lunch 5 times but we had another half hours riding to go yet. Next up was Rosenun, a nice climb with a bit of a step and lots of slate, although dry on the day it still presented one or two problems mainly for Mark. I will let him explain. Looe next stop for pasties and drinkies, i think this was a welcome stop. after lunch we did 5 or 6 more lanes which led us to the famous Muchlarnick, we all parked at the bottom where never say die Brownie decided to give it a go. Good on you mate this ones a bugger, a climb with lots of mud, holes you could lose your bike in and slippery slate steps all the way up. A few minutes later and the XR appeared with Brownie shoutng f""k that for a laugh!!! Meanwhile Harty thought he had run out of petrol but eventually got Devon Dans hired machine going again. Being low on fuel and not a garage nearby I decided to change the route reducing the miles to home. A few miles and lanes later and Harty did run out of fuel so petrol was drained into an empty coke bottle and shared around, what spirit and commeraderie you Devon boys have. Down here they would have kicked you in the boll""ks and nicked your wheels!! As it was getting late we finished off with a ride on The Saints Way followed by a good mucky one two minutes from the camp site. Got back about half 5 for the Devon boys to crack a few cans tell the tale and bbq a rather large cow

I hope you chaps had a good day, me and Martin were delighted to meet you and show you around some of our lanes. You were great company and I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. If any of you or any other group ever want to come down we will be more than happy do show you Cornwall.

Pasties a go go!


6 of the DTRFG went onto the deep realms of Cornwall this weekend, for a run on their lanes courtesy of 2 lads from the Cornish TRF, otherwise known as Peter and Martin. They'd kindly offered to Lead and TEC a run on their patch, this being Bodmin, Liskeard, Looe and Lostwithiel, my god did we do some fantastic lanes.

The fun started on Friday, where we all met up at a campsite at Cardinham Woods, near Bodmin. The runners were:

Harty - DRZ400

RichT4 - DRZ400

Brownie - XR400

Nickpdo - KTM450

SteveGT - TTR250

Mark - XR400

We all either tented or slept in vehicles, so the first night it was BBQ, beer and sat round a campfire. The weather forecast for weekend was perfect, but in the evenings it was a bit chilly for some, but not for others who were 'Glamping'biggrinbiggrin

After much beer consumed by some, it was time for bed at midnight as some were flaking it by the campfiredisbelief Our illustrious leaders were due with us at 8.45am, but at 8.30am they appeared, with a few of us not quite ready, so time we cleared our heads and got away was at 9.30 ish. On the cards was a 120 mile route covering approx 50 lanes. First of all we hit Bodmin, back through Cardinham Woods, then onto Warleggan and the infamous 'Pink Panther'. Well we all had a recce on foot first to despel the rumour of this hill, but it turned out to be true as it looked like a killerdoh

Brownie decided to have a crack at it first, see pics below for well deserved effort(I hated saying thatno)

I had to put a 2nd piccy of Brownie on his arsewink Brownie did eventually make his way to the top.

Anyway Nick then thought he'd also have a go:

Anyway Nick also eventually made his way to the top. We we all going to have a go as well, but by the time we'd stuck our helmets on the lane had been TRO'dbiggrin

By this stage a couple of us were getting a bit peckish for 2nd breakfast, so there was rumblings of we'd get our hands on a pasty, but not for a few good miles yet. We then toodled on over to Liskeard and did some lanes over there, we also did a little corker of a steep twisty climb, but on the way down, my tyre caught a rock causing me to smash my left handguard, so one badger for me.

Anyway we trundled on and did a couple of wet snotty lanes and this time might right handguard caught a tree and threw me into the goo, which also cracked my clutch lever, so badger no.2 for me. Luckily Rich had a spare lever that was about a foot longdoh It felt like it anyway, as it protruded past the end of the handlebars by about 3 inches!

We then came to a lane called Rose Nun, which the Cornwall boys flew up, literally in Peters case! It must have taken us 45 minutes to get all the bikes up, with one riding and two of us pushing. It was just slippery slate, which was getting polished by the tyres. In the midday heat, some of us were so hot and exhausted after that lane, that a drink andpasty was in order, so onwards to Looe for lunch on the harbour. The place was packed with grockles, all giving us odd looks in our muddy kit.

After some R&R and some well deserved pasties in Looe, a couple of us were hoping fill up, but the fuel station was shut, so onto Pipe Lane, which is so named as there are some large metal pipes going across the lane at an angle funnily enough, plus they are wet, so hitting them square on is the aim, but Mark hit them at an angle and smashed himself and bike into the water, I can't believe that he didn't hurt himself. Anyway we then made to the also infamous Muchlarnock, where my bike decided to stop working, so the remainder had a recce, of which Brownie attempted it, but no-one else felt like damaging their bikes.

Anyway my bike seemed to have a sticking float, so I was now running on reserve, of which ran out after only 4 miles, fuel was leaking out a carb pipe when stationary?? Anyway it was also about 4.30 ish and it was decided to cut the run short by 20 miles due to the fuel situation. More lanes were done, then we did Saints Way just before the end. 2 miles of fantastic lane and spectacular views, loving the twisty tracks around the gorse bushes. It was here that I ran out of fuel for a 3rd time, so thanks to all the fuel donors. On the last lane Steve decided to try some bog snorklingbiggrin I did believe that there were other badgers amongst us that day, so we eventually got back to camp for 5.30 and well earnt can of cold ciderbeer.gif

Got to say a massive thanks to Peter and Martin for taking us round, plus helped in finding us a decent campsite. Great couple of lads who were forever helping us out.

So anyway same thing Sat night, beer, BBQ and fire, this time though with some aching jointsdoh

Fantastic weekend and a great days riding on Saturday.

I big thanks you to our guides Martin & Peter from Cornwall TRF and also to Harty for pulling it all together.

We were supposed to being doing two days riding but all the sun, lanes (camp fire and beer) got to some of us and so we decided to make Sunday a leisurely start and an early home.
The lanes were fantastic and no doubt we'll be back again soon.
I might even have a crack and Pink Panther next time biggrin

Great company guys, looking forward to the next adventure.

Funny how Rosenun, Pink Panther and Muchlarnick always stick in peoples minds.
Seen a fair amount of tyre smoke and sweat at all three.
I recall one midlands trf rider who was astounded to find his trusted knobbly would not grip at all
Not been there for a while but it is hard to believe they have got any harder than they used to be because I always felt I had achieved something special to have made it to the top.

That's the problem with being a short arse, having too tall a bike and putting my right foot into into a bog once on the bikedisbelief

Cracking weekend, even with a kick only KTM!disbelief

Pink Panther will be attempted again, but with about 6 psi in the rear.wink

Huge thanks to Pete and Martin for showing their fantastic lanes, each lane had a mix of slate, bog ruts and dust!smile

Had a great weekend, even got back in time to mow the lawn and have a BBQ.

Well done Harty for arranging the trip, still a little bit sore now.wink

I love the picture of Brownie sat on Pink Panther, clearly feeling quite safe that he will have time to get out the way before Nick gets that far!

I recall Rosenun being an SSSI with interesting fossils embedded in the rocks and I confess to having had time to take a close look at them on more than one occasion while shepherding a group uphill.

Going all the way to Muchlarnick then just looking at it? Long way to go to have a look!
Actually I did no more when I first discovered it but that was because I was out exploring alone and unbeknownst to me the local LDT was in full swing with a queue of about 50 bikes either waiting their turn or getting their breath back after failing, so I came back another day to have a go without an audience. Never did make it up in one go clean, but the sense of satisfaction of getting up after earlier in the day twisting my ankle on Morden so badly that I could not stand on it was only outweighed by the sense of relief. Much, much scarier going down!

Rosenun had a big step in it similar to the one at the piggery, after waiting for others I had a good look at it and hit it square on, result, straight up and over and managed to keep enough momentum to carry on up to the top with out stopping.
Cracking lane!

Muchlarnic didn't look as tough but boy was it hard once I got into the bike size holes, the bike was jammed and it took me 5mins just to turn it around, I actually picked the bike up and swung it around, you could hardly stand on the wet, flowing mud!

Trial riders would love it but not ideal on an xr400, like you say Pete, After going all that way I was always gonna have a look at it......

First time round I had no idea there was an LDT that day and was astonished by the activity I came across when out exploring.
I spent a while watching bikes set off under the LDT marshalls beckoning finger.
Moments later furious revving, clangs, sudden silence or expletives, more revs, then either silence or more often a red faced rider returning back down.
Most came back defeated, maybe 25% made it.
I walked up and had a look and decided to come back another day rather than wait my turn in a queue that went all the way back to the ford for what would be a one try only on the day attempt.
On returning I stopped three times 'for a rest' to get my breath back on the way up.

What a trip! The lanes were brilliant, a lot more rocky and technical than I'm used to. I am so glad I stuck the trials tyre on before the trip. Got to say I was well impressed with my little TTR hanging out with the big boys.

A huge thank you to Harty for setting up the trip, and to Martin and Peter for such a good run. I just loved the Cornish/TRF route discussion lingo, complete with whistle and hand gestures - you had to be there!!!! And not forgetting Nick who introduced a number of us to the delights of toasted Marsh mallows, yum yum.

Couldn't have asked for a better bunch of blokes to spend the weekend with. Thanks guys, I've had a great weekend. Still can't get over Harty bringing a full size fredge with him.

Nearly forgot, I had 2 badgers, a slight altercation with a hedge, and one stoppage in a rather large goey puddle of mud when second gear wasn't enough to power the TTR through - sorry to Mark directly behind who I could cleary hear swearing as he was also forced to stop as I held him up.

Now, as I see Steve has posted a photo of the katoom with it's seat off before we even went anywhere I thought I should clarify - I was charging the battery from the car, that's it, no breakdown...wink

Pete and Martin did prewarn us about Pink Panther but they did say there was an easy route, but once Brownie had a go then I went and put my lid on, thing is, he had walked round the corner to see what was in store, whereas I just had a fag at the bottom.

Once I could here his engine no more then I assumed he had cleared it, so, dropped the rear to about 10psi and held on, all was fine until I had the first "obsticule", got up the bank, then rolled / slid back down again.no After lining up again then it was a case of full throttle, but dropped the front back down just in time, to be completely out of line for the next bit. Thanks to Pete and Martin for their help on the next 8m or so.

Pete did say to go to the top, turn round and come back down, but I kindly mentioned that I'll meet them at the top.

Railway lane stopped me in knee deep water, slurry and general muddy stuff, really do need to put my breathers in the air box.wink

Rosenun was a completely unexpected cracking lane that took some run up to complete, unfortunately I did not have said required run up.cry

And after pulling Rich's DRZ said up as well I was truly knackered.

Some of my favourite lanes and scenery were in the centre of the forests and over the moors, Saints Way was cracking, followed by the final lane to tthe campsite, watching SteveGT slid down a bank into a deep bog was brilliant, and just great to power through all the way.

Turns out the leccy start issue is a blown 10a blade fuse, hence why my speedo won't turn on when the engine is not running (thanks for the heads up Martin).smile

And the only puncture was a front which didn't appear until Sunday morning, (not mine).

And just before we left we heard a singing 2T and a deep 4T enjoying the nearby lanes, certainly not stealthy!wink

One more thing, I filled up on fuel, but then, I grab every chance I can get, but still hit reserve for the last 12 miles or so.

Until I learn how to ride proper and get some good body armour, I'm going to leave this sort of lane to the TRF warriors. Bloody good attempt by Nick and Brownie... you do realise that you're just a little bit nuts though don't you?

That rock was meant to ease the step but it was so steep I just push it out of the way then stopped.

The pics/vids don't really show how steep it is.

It looks different when it is shiny wet and covered in loose leaf litter and fallen trail riders.

I lost my rear light lens there and didn't realise till I dropped the bike again on Muchlarnick (halfway across Cornwall), and looked in vain for red plastic. Six weeks later at the Devon TRF monthly meeting I was handed said item and told a tale involving visiting Welshmen falling off, like me, at the point Brownie's video ends at the easy top part of PP.

When I arrived at the bottom of the lane for the first time ever, out exploring, a bloke with a clipboard accosted me asking my number.
While I was wondering why he was asking and why he could possbly want to know two blokes with numbers on their bikes turned up behind me.
While the first revved off round the corner his mate and the observer explained to me that the lane I was about to ride included an observed trials style section as a part of the local long Distance Trial
Three marshalls helped would be riders manhandle their machines up and around the corner over the steps and on their way, including me.
The lumpy rocky section at the bottom precludes any kind of fast line into the S bend. If you can get enough speed in then a wall of death style high outside line will deliver at best a smooth line , or more than likely enough speed to ride the step as you drop back into the inside staircase groove. Too slow in and you find out how truly steep it is. After the bottom corner your troubles aren't over as the gulley changes sides as you ascend further.
I have seen a number of glowing faces at the top end, eventually...
