road tax limbo???

hi guys,

im still waiting for the dvla to send me the v5 on my new bike.

the previous owner didnt have it registered and only had the new keepers supliment. I took a punt and knocked him down for the hassle as the guy before him didnt send off the paperwork to the dvla and he never chased it up.

anyway im insured now and want to use it but the tax is out....... the stupid thing is that if i kept the old suppliment i could have taxed it but now i cant until i get the v5... up 3 weeks away.......arrrrrgh

any thoughts on a way round it?  or just sod it and stay offroad as much a poss :)

We can not possibly endorse riding an illegal machine on the Queen's highway, could we?   nono

Having said that - I know what I would do.  confuse

Be careful, Dom, it's your call.

If you take what documentation you do have along with you to the DVLA office on Marsh Barton they will probably be able to issue a tax disc there and then

X marks the spot link below

http://www.trfdevon.org.uk//xmarks/xmarks.html?g=SX9242789847&t=SX9242789847

They have a bizarre queueing system so don't panic if you hear numbers higher than yours being called

Have you got enough of the V5 to see the 'Reference Number'? If so you should be able to tax it online as they 'know' it's insured and MOTd.

Can you tax it at the Post Office? There used to be a form available for just that.

Or try 'phoning them - although 'phoning any organisation like DVLA should be seen as a last resort.

No, I take that back, the 'last resort' is say sod 'em and just ride the thing - well, you will be taxing it from the beginning of this month. But, as Martyn said, it's your call)

Cheers,

John

Yes.  Don't ride an untaxed bike on any vehicular right of way, you won't be insured even if you have insurance and a quiet exhaust.

You always used to be able to use a V10 and V62 instead of a V5 but now this is the case:

Taxing without a Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement
If youre shown as the registered keeper of the vehicle on DVLA records, you can tax in person or by post at your nearest DVLA local office.
Youll need to complete a V62 Application for a Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C) which must be accompanied by £25 (fee for a duplicate Registration Certificate). Include this with a completed V10 Vehicle licence application, MOT, insurance and payment for vehicle tax.
If your address has changed, youll need to provide your driving licence, original bank or building society statement or recent utility bill. If your name has changed, you need to provide your marriage certificate, decree nisi, decree absolute or deed poll.
If youre not shown as the registered keeper on DVLA records you cannot tax the vehicle. Youll need to apply for a Registration Certificate in your name. To get one, fill in form V62 Application for a Vehicle Registration Certificate and post to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1DD. You may have to wait up to four weeks for a new certificate to arrive. In the meantime, you should keep your vehicle off the road.

Do you have the New Keepers supplement and a receipt? you could try that at the VRO or ask them if the record has been updated yet, if it has bob's your uncle - go talk to them they are helpful! And the Manager used to be a bit of a biker and rode a CX 500!

I got spotted a while back driving to the post office to tax my car! Even though it was only 30mins after, paying for the whole month (day in question 25th) I still got fined 80 sodding quid! When I contested it, they didn't bat an eye lid and told me it was still being driven 'illegally'!! B&$t@rds!!!

well you summed it up... ive done the v62 and sent to the dvla. called them and they said that you cannot tax the vehicle without the renewal, v5 or the vehicle being in your name........... i hate this country........what a load of bull, this prevents no crime and only encourages people to risk it.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I am sure you can do all the above in one go at the DVLA office on Marsh Barton

They will provide all the necessary forms and help you fill them in.

You might be there quite a while but you should be able to walk out with a tax disc in your hand

Pete - I don't think you will, the reason taxing a vehicle with a V62 instead of a V5 was stopped was because it was too easy to ring or clone a vehicle, and believe me there is a lot of that going on. But give the local office a call, you have nothing to lose. and keep calling, as soon as you are shown as the keeper on the computer you can tax it, and there may well be a lag between computer update and V5 posted and delivered.

I hope you did a HPI check before buying?
Think the best you can do is try and chase up DVLA.

Riding an untaxed bike is a crime, this process prevents you from doing it.  You bought a bike without a V5.......
