TRF ?

Tap tap tap on the key board its easy but doent it wind some folk up some times me included ? ive recently talked chatted to a number of members and regulaly read threads what im hearing and whats a foot,The TRF was founded to protect the passage ways we travers but to me its a little more than that its become a sort of tweeter /face book to and im suppposing meny other things to other folks ,now i know meny of the older TRF peeps its about rights of way etc but to the younger newer  riders its about rideing there bikes witch isnt cheap ? at any rate for me i look forward to the closed organised events and the socail side of that to, every organised event has had a very good turn out attendance , my concern chinese wispers that there will be less of this type of none compitative events in the Devon TRF in 2012 please tell me this is not so what with membership renewall  i see has gone up and are now due for renewall

im aware of what i gain in supporting the TRF in devon and  i didnt join to grabs some maps i joined to have all the above and more  so im hopeing we move with times and roll on the next meeting more not less? and i will continue to assist if reqd at open and close as i have in the pass ,for me that is what i want from the Devon TRF kerry aww

Back in July last year I sent a proposal for a Devon TRF family weekend in 2012. ie Camping/bbq with a campfire on the Fri/Sat night at a campsite near Newton Abbot that I know, with ride outs on the Sat for Novice and Experienced riders. This would be restricted to fee paying members only. It's been very hard to get a response to my proposal, so not really sure whether it would get much of a response from members or even if it would be given the go ahead.confuse

thought that the difference in price that a member paid and a non member paid for these organised events should be revised .

Compared to what you pay for a two hour hare and hounds enduro its a no brainer.

£15 member-£20 non member is that a club benefit, im happy to pay the £15 all day long as well as my annual membership, the point im making is others tip up to the event for a £5 more and no membership

Not everyone gets to the meetings due to work commitments, family commitments or even the distance to trek down to Bovey Tracey for some members in North Devon is a 140 mile round trip. This does not mean that they are not supporting the TRF. For some members, just paying membership fees is enough support.

Well said Wain lot of people I've spoke to feel the same. A member would need to do 9 events a year to break even with a non member. Its not really an incentive to encourage membership. As theirs not that many events.

food for thought perhaps, especially as dougie quite rightly above points out hare and hound events are a bit more expensive, perhaps squeeze a little more out of non members thus producing some more revenue for the trf.......only my opinionsmile

I might be incorrect on this one, but i think the idea is to keep the costs down to encourage non members to see what we are doing and get them to join the TRF.
Also it is better to charge less and get full capacity ££££ is what the Devon TRF need to keep up all the other work we do, (lane clearing/ROW/Events/) etc.

All I'm gonna say is the that any type of club that I've belonged to in the past always seems to rely on a core of people who do most of the work.

I have resigned from two club committees before after getting so fed up with people who just turn up for events and moan, if all they want to do is pay their membership fee that's fine by me, but don't then moan about  the lack of events etc if they have put no effort in themselves.

The more you put in the more you will get out and that's true for most things in life.

I've been trail riding on and off for 28 years but only been a member of the DTRF for a year, I joined to meet and ride with different people and have made many good friends already this year and I haven't a bad word to say about the club as I know how hard it can be to organise things and make things happen.

Just my personal opinionsmilebiggrin

P.S. I'd be up for the camping, try mentioning it again.

Mark - having just spoken to Steve (to check if he'd ever received it) where did you send this proposal as this is the first time I've every heard of such an event?

The events calendar will be released around Feb as it is every year.

As for the rest of this thread I shall spend the afternoon considering a sensible response rather than the hasty one I want to do right now

Seem to recall we have been here before in another life mate!

I didn't joint for the events, I didn't join for the maps (well OK I guess knowing where I could ride was a major factor in joining in the 1st place along with how to ride, what to take, what to wear, how to fix my bike, what tyres to use, what tools to carry etc etc etc).

I could have saved £40 and carried on doing just the same this year as I did last year as i know where the lanes are and have all my riding buddies but is it right to do so????

But.........I happily paid my £40 and personally would be happy to pay double as I do so to play my small part in keeping the lanes open for us all to enjoy. I can't make many meetings due to work etc (and TBH meetings ain't my thing) but do what I can clearing lanes and leading runs etc.

The events are great - but if thats all your in the TRF for then confuse well, I'll shut up now hmm

Except to say....I don't charge for leading runs.......yet........and comments like some of those posted above make me wonder........

Not much has changed here then, some people still use record players.

I haven't been out on the lanes with another TRF member since March 2010, I think it was with Harty and another bloke whos name I can't remember - had a good laugh though.

Just do 1 event a year and really hurt yourself, good value for money me thinks.

It has been known for some scroats just to turn up without paying for membership or the event

Its all fun! Me and dad have just renewed are joint membership for the year. 60 quid is nothing to pay for a years fun and enjoyment. As JT said i wouldnt worry about paying double or more as its my main hobby. I do what i can with lane clearing etc but so far i have never been to a meeting, mainly due to work and the distance.

We go to every event and if there were more i would attend as they are good fun! And im sure they always bring in lots of money!

Yes the TRF do alot more good work than just the events.
But (at events) if a " pay per ride rider"at £25 (still very cheap for a day) colud have saved a tenner it would be more of an incentive than a fiver.
Don't think anyone sugested paying for a rideout JT but then again you might be on to something their.

COME ON!!

COME ON!!

More posts this thread is getting me excited by the sheer amount of enthusiasm and people/members wanting to improve things for the coming yr of 2012 smile

Makes me very happy smilesmilesmilesmile

Loads of jobs need doing and I'm sure there wont be an officer refusing help to complete certain jobs /tasks to improve things wink

A few of the ideas mentioned above have been suggested last yr but no weight to carry them forward confuse

Remember EVERY member does something by renewing their membership

How fast and which way you want to improve things is down to the amount of willing volunteers

I would like to take this very good opportunity to THANK everyone who helped me and other members to clear lanes in 2011

THANKS! Wacky

Pay yer membership.
Ride yer bike.
Lead the odd run to help pass on the knowledge.
Meet some top like minded blokes and gals.
Attend cracking funday events.
Clear the odd lane.
Send in a run log so we can still ride the lanes years down the line.
And for the record, I went to the 2010 AGM but it's hard enough getting permission for time on the bike.
Ohh, and take the p**s and photos for extra laughs.
Simples.

There will be events this year but we wont have a finalised calendar until February simply because no landowner/farmer is ready to commit this early, and,  were all busy with other stuff. But they may well include, Hazelwood, Haccadown, WWB, Cotton Farm.  The pricing policy is simple, we need to cover our costs, make some money for RoW work, but keep it cheap enough for members to afford and charge a little more for potential members. We work very hard at policing these events; it works out well most of the time.

Harty, I believe Debbie is conversing with you regarding your excellent idea.

I cant lie I was really disappointed with the turn out for the AGM it was around 10% of the membership. Its difficult to make future decisions regarding the running of the group with such a low turnout, I know not everyone can make it, but lack of support is not fair reward for the effort expended. Its one night out of 365 that we have to get the group sorted for the next year.

Please remember you get far more from remaining a trf member than just few events each year, the national trf provide;

·         An operating structure

·         Membership services database

·         Event insurance via BMF (without which we could not run events)

·         Matched funding bursary claims.

·         Professional RoW assistance

·         Trail mag

·         Financial support (anyone know how much a judicial review cost?  - £100K  just to get a seat at the table)

As a Devon member you get;

·         Two online forums

·         Monthly newsletters

·         Several ride events per year

·         Several social events per year

·         Discount at local retailers (this alone may well pay for your membership)

·         More rideouts than you could ever go on.

·         Access to the overlay and database (30 years in the making)

·         Free run leaders (yes, a lot of group actually charge for runs)!

What a lot of guys fail to grasp is that the lanes you all love to ride on are suffering a natural decline by those antis who will lie and cheat to take them away, if nothing is done they will be gone. The trf is the ONLY organisation fighting for use by MPVs, every pound you pay in membership keeps them alive, why would you not pay your membership?

Back in the summer I organised a national trf exec meeting here in Devon, despite us being the biggest group at just under 400, there were more guys who travelled from Manchester to attend than attended from Devon. I was personally ready to chuck it all in were it not for a few of the same ole happy faces who turned up to help. This including one seemingly unlikely east Devon member who despite being the sole carer for a severely disabled child managed to turn up and show support.

I still find it astonishing how many members refer to the trf as if it was nothing to do with them despite having paid to join, the group is what you make it not what someone else is going to do for you. So please stop bleating, pay yer money and get involved with your group.

Oh and if we could not put negative threads on an open to all forum page it would make life so much easier!

i think the point some people are making is that there has to be a benefit to being a member (opposed to not) regarding the events.
its the same old people turning up every time , so being a member isn't important but it would be if it was a members only event or £20 extra for non members.

the amount of people that would join or rejoin would balance the books in my opinion!
the events are important to some people and i myself like the social side of them.

as said thou this should be discussed at the next meet really!

Is that so old boy? Mmm.

Pitched at just below the price of an enduro the lure of an all day ride should attract those prepared to pay for an hour or two. The deciding factor in the past has been the sheer economics of being sure to balance the books so the group did not end up funding the landowner rather than the fighting fund and that caution has allowed the events to become a success. With a free course the gamble of increasing the price would not financially burden the group in the event of a washout but any fee could wipe out a significant part of the groups funds. Past arrangements have been a percentage of the take but a certain amount is expected. It seems the balance has been struck about right in the past but there may be more untapped potential yet. Looks to be an interesting discussion.

the problem is time and time again we have to deal with problems resulting from the antis quoting stuff spotted on our open forums.

if anyone has any dought as to what were up against have a look at these folks;

http://www.gleam-uk.org/

Ive seen the national RoW folks in action and the level of professionalism is awesome I hate to think were hindering them with daft comments we make in public.

all members have access to the yahoo forum where these discussions are better placed.
