I think a load of new rules have just come in so maybe all testers will be a bit more acute at the moment.

A tip I read was to take your vehicle to gcouncil owned test centres as they cannot do any repairs so have no interest in failing things other than on safety grounds, and probably if they just don't like the look of you.

Here's a list of them in the Southwest

Bath Bath and N.E.S. Council, Transport Services, Windsor Bridge, Bath, BA2 3DT 01225 447754
Bristol Sandy Park Rd, Brislington, Bristol, BS4 3NZ 01179 036319
Bristol Broad Lane, Engine Common, Yate, Bristol BS37 7PN 01454 863920
Cornwall Cornwall Transport Organisation Engineering, (CTO) Central Group Centre, Castle Canyke Road, Bodmin, PL31 1DZ 01872 327827
Cornwall Cornwall Transport Organisation Engineering, (CTO) Western Group Centre, Radnor Road, Scorrier, Redruth, TR16 5EH 01872 327252

I know its a long way out for you but i use:

Colyton Garage Ltd
3/4/Old Station Yard/Station Rd, Colyton EX24 6HA

01297 552776

Even though they are some way from my home, i dont trust any of the MOT testing stations in Honiton having been ripped off furiousfurious

I can vouch for the council ones in Ivybridge and Paignton regularly used the one in Paignton when I lived there, very fair.

There used to be a even better one where if you you paid thirty pounds more than the M.O.T. charge, your car would get put up on the ramp whilst you had a cup of tea with the owner whilst he filled out your pass certificate and you walked out with a twelve month ticket without anyone ever even looking at your vehiclesmile I'm older and wiser now (I hope)  and I look back and  think did I really do that.

The guy I use has no interest in big repairs, but their is a body shop next door that will take on welding. Also John Sin**** who is a very good honest mechanic and known to many on here I'm sure is just around the corner.

Thanks all for your imput and numbers.
Just found out it's terminal, but best to know (bill to fix in excess of what it is worth, and that aint much, it is the kind of car that doubles in value everytime you fill it up)
So another Shack-mobile heads off to the big Scrapyard in the sky.
Ho-hum
