I finished work on Friday lunchtime and drove to Gregs place near Harbertonford, we then drove Andys van, which was already loaded with Gregs and Andys bikes, to his place in Ashburton where we picked him up and drove to Pridhamsleigh where he picked up his horse box which he was taking up to Wales to sell just three miles up the road from where we were staying in Rhayader. We then followed him up to Rhayader at 55 miles an hour (yawn). When we got to the Severn Bridge, even though Andy was about three times our size, because he had a sink and cooker fitted he managed to pay a lot less than us as not classed as a commercial (£18.10 is a rip off for a Mercedes Vito). Lee and Craig, from Paignton, were somewhere up in front of us with their bikes and mine in Lees Vauxhall Movano and a few hours behind us, coming up from Plymouth, were two more vans and four more guys, two Marks and two Steves.
We finally arrived at Rhayader at about 7, Andy carried on to sell the horse box whilst me and Greg unpacked and settled into our room and went to meet Lee and Craig.
Greg, Andy and I were staying in our normal room in the Lamb and Flag and the others in the Crown opposite.
Once everyone had arrived, a few drinks and a mixed grill were in order, then a quick look at my laptop to decide our route for the next day. We all decided on a route that most of us had done before even if not altogether so hopefully no worries about getting lost. Tried to send the route from Memory Map to Lees new, very expensive Garmin Montana which we managed to do after sending it in a GPX format, but it would only accept the first 250 waypoints so chopped the last part of our route off, so it looked like it was up to me to bring us home with the Road Angel if our memories of the route faded. Then some went to bed and some decided to stay on in the bar (sore heads for some in the morning).
Day 1
Breakfast at 9, all ready for the off at 10

Steve KTM 530, Mark KTM 530, another Steve KTM 530, another Mark KTM 250 2T, Craig WR490, Lee KTM 250, Greg CRF450, Andy CRF450, Me CRF450.
On to the first lane and by the end we had our first puncture on Lees KTM. As we were so close to our base we sent Craig back to get a spare tube from one of the vans just in case we needed some later, half an hour later and we were off again. Next was the long track around the reservoirs where we met plenty of other bikes and even more 4 x 4s and also a lot of squaddies on training. Up on the hills, they stood out with their orange safety jackets on and looked like a load of lost KTM riders probably looking for their stands . Must be about 5 miles around these reservoirs, about ¾ of the way round Greg split his tyre and limped to the end where we did a makeshift repair by using his old inner tube with the valve removed and packed it in between the inner wall of the tyre and the new tube to stop the tube escaping through the hole in the tyre.Once in it was pumped up and it didnt look too bad so instead of heading back to change wheels he decided to carry on (rather wobbly at speed on the roads, but lasted all day).
A couple more lanes and then I realised I had lost my front mudguard bag with my spare tubes and tyre levers in, b******s, no time for a search though so on we went.
By now Lees Garmin had more issues, the screen kept freezing and then just went white so we switched it on and off a few times but it just kept doing it (not impressed with this £500.00 bit of kit).
No rain yet, but was forecast for 4pm, but great trails and fantastic views as normal.At about 1.30pm we arrived at Strata Florida, Steve, on a KTM 250 2T, was a little worried about his fuel situation, but it would have been quite a lengthy detour for fuel so we persuaded him to carry on and, if needed, others would drain some of theirs for him.
Strata Florida was full of bikes and 4x4s, but not that much water this time thankfully, but on one crossing, Craig managed to stall right in the middle and it took us almost an hour to strip his bike down and get him going again.No issues with fuel on the only 2T so we arrived at the garage at Beulah at about 3.00pm for a very late lunch and a fuel stop.Memories of the remaining route had faded with time, so I set off as leader with the trusty Road Angel, through Garth, Built-Wells, New Bridge on Wye, Llanwrthl and back to Rhayader with a few more lanes on the way, getting back about 5pm.
After a shower we planned our route for the following day and we decided that in the morning we would settle up with the pub and pack everything in the vans and drive to Llandovery and set of from there as it was a little closer to home for the return trip after our ride.
That night we decided to go to the local curry house, bit of a wait for the food but a great curry and after a few glasses of red wine for me we headed back to the pub where again some had more than others.
In the morning, by the time we surfaced, the rain had already set in and the four riders from Plymouth decided to give it a miss and head home, that left myself, Lee, Andy, Greg and Craig, so said our goodbyes and as planned drove down to Llandovery and parked in the car park opposite the bikers café. We had decided to try one of the routes sent to me by a fellow DTRF member (no names mentioned) so a new route for us, we only started off at about twelve, we got to the first lane and was met with a Welsh footpath sign and a locked gate. Whilst we were looking at the Road Angel to cut route, three blokes came marching up the road telling us that we could not ride the lane as it was now a footpath, I explained that as it had a footpath sign and was locked that we would not have tried to ride it anyway, he explained that he had campaigned for the lane to be down graded to a footpath and that people had been lifting the gate off its hinges and still going through ( this guy spoke posh and was not welsh, another NIMBY in my opinion sorry for the generalisation) so off we went to find another lane. We rode a few more lanes and opened plenty of gates, some of these lanes had new gates and new signage, but a lot had no signage at all and some where marked with the odd post across a field with a small byway sign on it and with plenty of gates. When you got to the end of a field I started to wish I had loaded a 1:25000 scale map so at least I would have been able to see field boundaries. Found a couple of others which had been down graded to footpaths and another one which had a chain on the gate, but still had a byway sign so we lifted it off its hinges and carried on through. Came across another section of the two day welsh enduro event, which is due to take place in a couple of weeks, in the middle of a forest track. Carried on through the forest to another lane with a steady climb in the mist up to 412 metres. Once at the top the view down the other side was frighteningly steep, luckily the lane followed the ridge along and went gently down the opposite side again, we then carried on to Cilycwn where we decided that as we were all soaked through by this time that we would call it a day and head back to Llandovery.
Trying to get changed and put the bikes in the vans was a challenge in itself with the rain hammering it down by now, then into the café for something to eat before the return trip home.
Lees van decided to shed its auxiliary belt halfway home so we limped back with side lights on and no radio to try and save battery life and all made it home by 9pm.

Already looking forward to the next one later in the year when hopefully we will have our trusty guide, Clive, again and can relax a bit more and just follow him.

Good report there Russ. Reading that gave me something to do whilst sat in a Maccy D's in Douglas, Isle of Man killing time waiting with baited breath to hear if the Senior TT race is going to be run or not. Weather has been attrocious so dont hold much hope and were homebound tomorrow so we'll miss it if it's postponed :0(
Hi Geoff don't try and make me feel sorry for you I'm still jealous, you must have seen some good racing. Hope your ready to hit the lanes when you get back?
Eight of us from the Cornwall TRF went to Wales a couple of weeks ago and stayed at Llanerchindda Farm near LLandovery. We did the normal trails, Sarn Helen, The Strata, around the reservoirs etc and then up to the Rhayader area. We had blue skies and no clouds for both days riding, couldnt believe our luck. We had Clive as a guide and boy can he ride. Both days were from 9 in the morning and returned about half 6, they were full on and bugger me did we ache afterwards.
If anyone wants a guided trip around some of the best trails you can find then Clive and Llanerchindda Farm is the place for you. We will certainly go back next year.

Half six! thats only half a days riding if we are talking about the same Clive One visit about three years ago we were about sixty miles north of where we were staying at six o'clock and didn't get back till 9.30. Its got to be the same Clive and a agree he can certainly ride a bike and he's no spring chicken. Glad to see you enjoy Wales as much as us Hope to be going back in a couple of month with Clive as guide again
