Hoops another cheaper option is an alarm battery from maplins, which you could mount behind the headlight shroud, its what I'm planning to do on the IT when I finally get the jetting sorted!
I'm sure I read on here ages ago that someone used/uses a Power Monkey with their RA once the internal battery has run out. Did I remember right? If so, what did you use and how did you find it? Was the internal RA battery and the Power Monkey good for a full day's ride? How did you cope with waterproofing?
I'll be using the "packed lunch box" method to mount my RA, I'm asking about the Power monkey as it's been hit and miss for me powering off the bike in the past.
I have used a power monkey (still have it). I power my RA from a fused line straight from the battery. I rarely have any issues. I use a fag lighter socket bolted to the back of the headlamp cowl. I have wired it via an Optimate cable so I can disconnect and charge the bike battery if necessary. It makes maintenance easier as well when I have to remove the headlamp and associated wiring. I have attached the RA mounting to the handle bar brace using thick cable ties.
I am very happy with it. This set up has survived over two years of laning on the DRZ.
Cheers Rich, not looking to mess with all that sort of stuff really (plus I don't even know what that thing is!). Followed loads of advice two years ago or so about powering off the bike, ended up buying lots of bits and not getting anywhere, otherwise than chucking money away and loads of blown fuses so just want something "plug and play"
Depending on the display brightness setting on the RA, I get 6-7 hours RA life, but carry a second Monkey just to make sure. I'm usually on my way home when I do the final change, but it's just to make sure my track is complete, to keep John Leah happy!
When I finally modernise to a bike with a battery, or I figure out how to power from the generator or I finally cough up for a replacement RA battery, I have to put up with this method.

Went out for almost for hours at the w/e on a full charge, RA lasted throughout with scren brightness of 60%.
