Amongst other things ACU six days trial on a 1918 FN 500 (4 cylinder in line) on road tyres cos thats all they had! - He got a gold medal. As well as the London - Endinburgh - London and London - Lands End - London trials and that was before there was much in the way of tarmac anywhere!
This is his team - he's in the middle

Yup and he moved from London to Somerset to improve his chest! I bought a copy of the 1921 Motorcycle mag on ebay last week which had coverage of the ACU trial on the off chance he was mentioned. He was with a pic of his bike showing number 46! The photo was undated so now I know!
Anyway sorry for going off topic - all the bikes we rode around the farm - James Captain, D3 Bantam, Franny B 200, AJS 500 etc all had road tyres to begin with because we couldnt afford knobblies - bikes are made to be ridden!
