Bike wanted

Looking for a bike for green laning. Something suitable for experianced road rider, but inexperianced off road.

Am keeping a looky out on ebay, gumtree, Autotrader and here, anywhere else I should be looking?

Budget is around £1k could possibly be stretched a little.

Also after suitable kit, size 11 boots everything else a large, will go new with helmet.

Let me know if you have anything of interest

I don't know that bike but have had an XR400.

An excellent bike that only lacks an electric start.

I strongly recommend you go for a bike with the magic button, a TTR250, WR250, even a DRZ400 for example.

You'll no doubt get plenty of other bikes recommended here but whatever you get ride & enjoy it, you can always change it later.

Right after looking around I am fast approaching the conclusion the bikes listed by Steve H are all over budget so this is what I have seen, let me know you comments good or bad.

Looked at a Gas Gas EC300, tattyer (is that a word) than it looked in the pictures but looks like a serious piece of kit, no MOT at present, or side stand, lock etc, does have V5 up for £1K not negotiable
GasGas

Watching a Kawasaki KLX 250 on ebay from a dealers in Suffolk at a dealers so would have to buy blind and pay for delivery

Or quite local but not MOT'd

or coming up very local on Ebay

above XR is not replying to me

Sorry about links not being live, cut and paste into your browser.

Any help is much appretiated and will pay to join as soon as I have a bike!

I'm considering selling my TTR250 OE . I bought it from MR TTR Brian Sussex ( http://www.totallyttrs.com) 18 months ago after he'd given it a thorough refurb but sadly for various reasons have hardly used it . If you're interested and can stretch to £1200 Pm me and I'll send you more info.

I certainly wouldn't advise a GG300 for someone new to green laning - and GGs need a lot of TLC - so if its tatty to start with then walk away now.

The KLX250 is a pretty good bike, more than capable without being over the top.
There's also a nice looking XR250 on eBay right now (in north devon) - if that's the one you mention above have you tried phoning him?

And as for Green Lane motorcycles - I'm sure a few will disagree but they've had a bit of a bad press from many on this forum- I wouldn't use them again. Plus I think their prices are overly hiked - even for a dealer.

Wouldn't advise the GG for a novice rider blankstare

XR or DR would be a better bet to start on

willywombat PM sent, can stretch to 12, but trying to not get carried away!

Thanks for the replies, Gas Gases (is that the plural?) or GasGasi are out of the running and all watched on ebay have been deleted.

So do I wait until I am back in Devon at the W/E or just order the KLX?????????

Will definately hold off to see the TT mentioned above

Any TTR prepped by Brian will have had a thorough going over.

Trail bikes can have a very hard life & don't always get the maintenance they deserve.

A TTR needs less than many other bikes but if anything does go wrong the spares & knowledge available are second to none.

I hope it works out for you, A Brian Sussex fettled TTR makes an excellent trail bike.

And no, I'm not on commission wink

 Deposit paid, waiting on MOT.

Many thanks to everyone for your comments, all were very helpful especially those guiding me away from some of the bikes listed.

Looked at the TTR above and was very happy all round, now top join up and spend more money on boots etc
