How good is body armour

How good is body armour? took a tumble at Cotton Farm yesterday and landed on my shoulder and head, heads fine as you would expect but I think I've torn the muscles in my shoulder and from previous experience of the same injury they take a long time to heal.

I wasn't going fast, just got crossed up in a rut and down I went with quite a bump. Would body armour have helped in this situation?

My 1 finger typing is quite good but one handed 1 finger typing is pretty slow and I can't see me riding my mountain bike for a while.

I wear body armour whilst out riding full stop, i took a tumble after hitting ice last year i think and went down hard on my right shoulder, got up and walked away no issues, this is not to say body armour will cure all ills it will not, the systems tend to deflect you or objects thrown at you.

I use the full body armour type, not the mx type which has mainly front protection for rock strikes etc.

I guess it usually depends on a few things.

From my own personal experience, i used to ride with lots of body armor. tried to cover myself as best as possible. But the more i crashed the more i decided that body armor is going to do almost nothing to help the shear impact of hitting something. It could however, help with say landing on a large stone, or your elbow landing on a bit of tree route.

so for me, if you landed on a flat grass field, body armor will not save you from that impact.

Also as u landed on your shoulder, i dont think there is that many body armors that would have protected that.

i ended up deciding that i wanted my knees and elbows covered with guards. an id rather have the freedom of movement that comes with not wearing bulky armor as i felt i crashed less feeling more comfortable. So now i just race with a Thor sentinel light weight body armor that is pretty much a roost protector for your chest and nothing else.

I do think a neck brace is a good idea as well. but as your neck is fine probably wasn't required anyway

Personally i think it must have just been a freak bad landing. and that can always happen for not much of an accident ( remembering the lad who was running down exmouth beach to the sea years ago and fell, landed badly and paralysed himself)

Thanks guys, I think I'm going to have to look into it. I take longer to heal than I used to!

Maybe I should try and make an appointment with Lorenzo's doctor!

An absolute must in my opinion. I dont think I would be at work today if I was not wearing it yesterday.
It has paid for its self over and over
I would not ride without it

I wear the leatt adventure body suit and find it the most comfortable full armour I've used especially with a neck brace on! Your movement restriction is minimal compared to a few other brands I tried like my old sixsixone but you have to try some on to see for yourself but I definitely wouldn't ride without armour as I fall off a lot!!(0;

I cracked a rib in a slow fall on mud, as I had my mobile in my breast pocket. bought body armour and used it ever since, along with shin/knee guards.

Forcefield Pro Shirt, not cheap but you get what you pay for. Don't even know that you're wearing it and sometimes I wear it up to 12 hours a day

I've got the same as Harty's - excellent kit (not cheap but I've only got 1 body and if you are spending a few grand on a bike a couple of hundred on good protection makes sense.

The cheap hard armour will protect against stones etc, but you also need something to absorb some of the impact, so would armour have helped you Bob? I think so.

I'm looking to start some long distance trials and a bit of laneing! I can't decide between a decent jacket or the Forcefield body suit! Anyone get any advice? The Forcefield armour looks awesome though!

I was wearing a decent jacket with armour on Sunday but it did little to protect my shoulder. My understanding is that any armour which is attached to loose fitting outer garments, jackets or trousers, is likely to be in the wrong place or move on impact and be of little or no use. This is why racers wear leathers and I'm going to get a Forcefield Pro top.

The beauty of having a fitted armour suit is that you can wear it with a much wider variety of garments and still be safe. So when it's red hot in the summer you can just wear race shirt and still have the protection, it's also far easier to carry a light waterproof with you if the weather is changeable. A heavy jacket with armour does not give you the same protection or flexibility but certainly does have its place.

I have something similar to the Forcefield, but no where near as good.
I really don't want to buy one on the internet as I am not sure of the sizing. Do I need large or extra large ?? Where do I go to try one on ?
