Hi Nick, the 630 still uses the uprated 610 electric start engine which is very reliable and a good starter, i had the older TE610 not really good for devon lanes but brilliant on the open lanes and road work was a easy due to the good gearing. The suspension is not as stiff as a normal enduro bike.

Thanks for the reply Doug. I was considering a Husky TE630s to modify into an overlander, instead of the current DRZ400s, I wanted a bit more Zip :) . From what I have read, the bottom end and the gear box are the same, but the top end was redesigned in the 630 because the rocker shaft wears prematurely due to poor oiling design (I have no personal experience). Although I have read reports detailing long, successful trips over 1000s of miles. Nearly all comments are positive about their reliability and robustness. I have been in contact with two ABR riders who have ridden the Husky in several seasons of the BBRC http://www.bigbikerallychallenge.co.uk/ and both praise the bike reliability.
If anybody has one, I am particularly interested in looking at how to lower it, change the tank and how easy it would be to make pannier racks for it.
Cheers Nick

Does the TE630 offer any advantage over the BMW650 Xchallenge or KTM690 EnduroR? (cheaper, lighter, more dirt focused?)
Hi Rich
Both the TE630 and the Xchallange are rare and it's hard to find a good one. A good Xchallange is big money, in the region of 3.5k for a 6 year old bike plus the cost of lowering (new shock) larger auxiliary fuel tanks ect. I just think there is better value out there. So I have been comparing the KTM 690 with the TE630s. I must stress at this point that the information I have been given is from various sources and is not first hand experience. As I said in a previous post it's been from forums and a couple of the BBRC guys who have had both bikes.
The general consciousness is that the TE630s engine is the more reliable than the KTM690r engine (this was from riders that have owned both) one comment from a BBRCer was "Good luck, I really like my TE630, infact I like the Husky so mcuh I bought a TE450 to complement it for the more extreme local stuff. All my mates have sold their 690's after realibility issues (thats 8 mates who have moved on from the 690...most had some issues, a couple flogged them before issues occured)." But that is just one persons view but there was several comments about the KTM's reliability over a long trip. But more importantly there was a lot of praise robustness and reliability of the Husky.
Cost simples better value for money on the TE630s imho.
On road ride, another email from an ABRer who had both bikes
"I think the biggest advantage over a 690 is that the 630 is far less vibey and much more "rideable" than a 690. I've had lots of rides on mates 690's and yes, its got plenty of torque etc but the riding position for long days isn't ideal and the front end is pretty twitchy, plus there are the myriad reliability issues with the 690". Of the 630's I know (6), none has had any big mechanical issues at all - the only thing which has cropped up with three of them is a faulty water temperature sensor which when it fails causes the bike to run pretty rough, it's very obvious when it goes. It only affected the early sensors, not the later ones, so it's a 12 quid part from a husky dealer. I'd be tempted to carry a spare with me on a long trip just in case."
Off road ride, the Husky is the more off road orientated of the two.
You can get for both bikes all the general stuff you need to adventure's it. Tanks racking ect. I would need to lower either bike so not change there. To be honest I was really surprised how well the Husky came out in the comparison. For me and what I want to do with it, I thing the Husky is the better option...... if I can find one. Reliability is very important to me.
Can I stress this is a collection of opinions and I am sure there are a lot of people with have differing opinions. I have tried to speak to riders who have owned both bikes to get reliable opinions.

Hi Nick, come down hear on our next ride out and spend a few hours on mine, I am 5/6 short! and can get both feet down, yes the 630 will be higher but you will get a bit of an in sight of the bike, if I was going to do a over land trip with my 610 the back end would need reinforcing be for doing any fabrication, but a great bike and a go any where bike and a real blast on the road, I have just had a bash plate fitted so I am looking on getting a bit more adventurous!
See it at the nec, Place a deposit and get a £500 goodie voucher thrown in,
Production bikes ready for March 2014.
Job done !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice one Kev the Yorkshire in me won't let me pay £8000 for a bike!!!! But I do hope it lives up to it's hype and a few rich older guys buy then, and then a few years later sell them with low mileage I really do like the look and concept of the bike. On the subject of CCM if a good 644 came along I would consider it. Slightly more difficult to lower but an option.

Thanks Adam the 630 is only 5mm higher than the 610. Will pm you the next time I am down there. Are you coming up for the Ten Tors this year?
Nick, on a sad note Husky do not make the TE630 anymore now the factory is in Austria so you might have to snap one up fairly soon !! bit the £££ bullet mate you will not regret it.

Here's a question..
Are any of these bikes mentioned any better at over landing than a DRZ with a grand spent on the motor for example .bored, stroked and a wide raito gearbox, all know reliable mods ?

Hi nige not a clue, but is was something i thought about. I really like the DRZ but want more zip
Could try the 'E' good bits - Exhaust, Cams and FCR39 carb - that'll take her from approx 34 rwhp to about 40.
Then if you need more go for a modest big bore - 434cc
Also you can buy a new gearset from the US to give you a higher 5th gear for tarmac cruising without compromising the low speed gearing.
