Right I found this fella on my leaky pipe in the polly tunnel, it seems to have made (or did) he's cocoon from the leaky pipe? I have now placed some leaves over him and hope it survives. I thought there was just a bulge in the leaky pipe, was not expecting to find this!!!!
Now I know it is some sort of caterpillar, going into the chrysalis stage , but what breed is it
I'm on the border of north devon, does that count We are having north American weather Maybe it is worth something going back out to make sure it is OK! This time next year rodney
Judging by the size it is likely to be some kind of hawk moth caterpillar. I found an elephant hawk moth in the factory where I work recently and it had similar purple colouring, about two inches long with a wingspan of about four inches.
Not a native species but one which migrates from Africa, although there are some which have settled and are breeding here apparently
Thanks for the response, was hoping, he would still be there, as I would love to have seen the puss moth, was defo that one. But alas he has gone. Cheers everyone.
