I thought he did the right thing and isn't a plonker - obviously local knowledge plays a big part but how many of us have ridden through a small innocuous puddle to find it deep enough to swallow a bike? I know a few who have, and the old "submarine pen" in Ebford is a good example of such a place.
I have dismounted and walked through many fords instead of plunging in and hoping for the best, and most times I have remounted and ridden through, but a few times I could have lost the bike if I had not checked the depth first. He may have felt daft but he wasn't to know and it is best to err on the side of caution. At least the locals saved him test wading through.
A couple of weeks ago we rode a lane which had a very long stretch of nice brown rotten water. some rode the left which was quite deep.... I rode the right which was ankle deep but you wouldn't know before without prior knowledge.

It is often relatively easy to tell the deeper side, if not the depth, by looking at the topography.
The downhill side is usually deeper, as shown in the picture of Paul the depth gauge shown above.
Sometimes the information is no help though. Nik drowned his Pampera on the deep side and my CCM foundered on Jackmans lane some time back

The topography on the one we rode didnt give it away as it would have been tractors using the lane I reckon or 4X4 using the left side and middle. Theres another one near me which everywhere is flat except the bomb hole that you will soon know about when you ride through it .
